| oh poor sweet thing. She needs to have a Bile Acid Test- sounds like liver issues. But you need to check it soon- Liver issues are common in Yorkies and if caught early- a diet can manage them. WELCOME to yorkie talk- so sorry your first post had to be about your sick baby. Did you tell the vet about the head pressing? |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Those symptoms are more consistent with liver problems. Coccidia's biggest symptom is diarrhea. You should really have her bile acid tested.

| It sounds exactly like a liver shunt or MVD. She needs to be bile acids tested immediately and her diet needs to be altered and she needs to be put on supplements if the numbers aren't in normal range. How old is she?

| I agree. She needs a bile acid test. Did you know that Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined? If she didn't come from a reputable breeder who screens for liver disease, there is a good chance that this is what your puppy has. Portosystemic Shunts FAQ How old is she? Bile acids tests can't be done until she is 20 weeks old. I pray you got a health guarantee with this puppy. |

| Ladysmom I had no idea that they coudln't be done until 20 weeks- that's really good to know If you can't get a bile acid test done yet she needs to be on a VERY low protein diet. |

I understand why they shouldn't be done before 20 weeks but what about a pup with extreme symptoms? There are times when it looks exactly like a shunt but is something else and low protein isn't good for healthy pups, so it kind of puts owners in a spot. Then the pup is being diagnosed with no testing...

| Dr. Center used to recommend 16 weeks, but has recently revised it to 20 weeks based upon her research. She feels that the organs aren't developed enough at four months to get an accurate result. |

| I understand that generally speaking Dr. Center says puppies should be tested at 20 weeks, but when symptoms are this extreme they need to be able to try to rule out liver problems. A dog exhibiting symptoms that are so consistent with liver shunt should be tested in my opinion...The quicker this dog can get help, the more likely he is to get better and actually live... Without the results from the bloodwork, vets are not likely to recommend the proper protocol that a symptomatic liver compromised dog needs. Many, many puppies with liver shunts have been tested before the age of 20 weeks and they have been able to receive the proper care that they need before the liver shunt causes more damage.

| Oh, the poor little baby!!!! Did you contact the breeder? It also could be hypoglycemia. These little ones can go down so fast. Please give her some nutri-cal right away and get her back to the vet as soon as possible. Preferrably a different vet being that it doesn't sound like coccidia at all. Please update how she is doing. She is in my thoughts and prayers.

| I wasn't saying that a BAT shouldn't be done, only that the results on a puppy this young might be inconclusive. The OP probably would be better off taking the puppy to a vet school if possible if a shunt is suspected. Other tests like scintigraphy might be needed for an accurate diagnosis. |

| doin better Well she is doing alot better!!! We are going to get a second opion from a different vet. No blood work has been even done yet they are just assuming this is a liver shunt! She is on lactose and a pill and she is playing and actiing herself again! She is not walking into walls anymore its like a completley different puppy. We also did contact the breeder and they were extremley nice about the situation and were willing to help in anything we needed. Also she isnt 20 weeks yet shes only 10 weeks. This has been extremley emiotional for us and we appreciate all the help. Thank all of you. |
