| Puppy Diarehea-wont stop! Need Help!! I have 2 yorkies, a 6 month old and a 2 yr old. We had some issues with food initially, they were eating each others food and the 2 yr old was gaining weight. We slowly switched them to another food, which wasnt working, so we went back to the food our breeder reccommended for our puppy which was OK for our 2 yr old to eat as well. We must not have done it slow enough as the 6 month old was having serious diarehea. We took her to the vet and she put her on a bland diet, anti-biotics and said to try again. After a few different attempts, we finally got her back on the food we want her on, and she was still on the anti-biotics. After we stopped the anti-biotics, 3 days later, she started her diarehea again. She is going up to 7 times a day, sometimes its solid, sometimes its loose stools. She drinks plenty of water and is SO ACTIVE and playful so I am not worried about dehydration at this point. The vet is not giving me answers, and we've seen 3 different ones at this point. I lowered the amount of food to the lowest reccommended serving, but our 6 month old is under weight and our 2 yr old is over weight, both by 1 lb. I typically let them graze b/c they are finiky eaters, but now I'm starting to keep food from them and only feeding 2 times a day, which i hate doing. The food is Life's Abundance and the only reason we chose it was b/c our puppy was on it when we got her. We should never have switched her off of it, but now we dont know what to do! She's had 2 feces samples, both came back negative. Our 2 yr old has had no issues with any of the food we have given her, only our 6 month old. Does anyone have any suggestions?? We have been dealing with her diarehea since October, and if anyone thinks its just going to take more time, please let me know. I dont know how long switching food and letting their digestive system adjust takes. Thank you! Worried Mama |

| Try giving her a little bit of canned pumpkin off your finger. I just bought a biewer puppy, she was 5 1/2 mos when I got her. She started in with diarrhea, which, most likely was caused by her new home envioronment, etc. but, took her to the vet, her sample also came out negative for anything. They told me to give her a little bit of the canned pumpkin(it works for diarrhea and also constipation). She was also on anitibotics. they also gave me some of these little packets of proibiotics you put in with their food that stops the diarrhea..good luck.. |

| I don't know if it's something more serious - your vet seems to have ruled that out so I'm going to answer assuming it's just the change in food. OK Loki had terrible tummy issues until he was about 10 months old. Just one new kind of treat, a change in food (we did the same thing, wanted to change his food but just kept having problems) ANYWAY, it seemed to be a puppy thing and once we got him stabilized and he got a little older he was fine. What worked was feeding him rice. Chicken & rice is good, but if you are trying to introduce and stabilize the kibble just add plain cooked rice to the kibble or even give it separately before or after a meal. This helped so much and Loki's favorite food is still rice. You can get brown rice at the store but I think we just used minute rice because it was easy to prepare every day. It's not for nutrition it's just to bind them up. I know everyone is all about the grain free right now and I don't disagree, but my dogs have digestive problems whenever we try grain free. And since I don't enjoy waking up to them puking on my bed and they don't have any rice allergies, we feed Innova. I think LA is a pretty good food? I've never fed it but it's probably fine unless your dog is allergic to something in it. I think the vet can test for allergies if you are concerned about that. Otherwise you have to do an elimination diet which would just mess with their diet more right now and that's probably not such a good idea. Good luck!

| Thank you both! I forgot to mention that we did the chicken and rice diet initially, which has always worked. The last time we did it, our 2 yr old was nice and constipated for a day, and our 6 month old kept having problems. Thats when I knew there was something more to this, rice ALWAYS works, i couldnt believe it did nothing for her that time! I took away all their treats (which is so mean!) and maybe have given them 2 tiny ones over the past week. Could it be related to teething?? I called the vet and told them i was not going to bring her in for them to just take her temperture and charge me $80 again and send me home with no hope, so the doctor (a NEW one) is going to call me today, hopefully they will have some new suggestions. I'm going to mention that probiotic idea too!! Thanks again!! |

| For the canned pumpkin you only need a tiny amount so what I do is freeze it in one of those tiny ice cube trays and then pop them out into a ziplock bag and keep them frozen and then I give one to them on top of their food. A can of pumpkin lasts forever if you do that. I don't know how long it is good for if you leave it in the fridge. I have pro-biotics downstairs I always forget about but they are great. You have to keep it refrigerated though. The brand I have is The Wholistic Pet. They are a really good brand - no fillers or junk in their stuff. I've met the couple who own the company and they are very nice people. More than willing to educate To avoid constipation with the rice I would only give like 1-2 tbsp on top or mixed in with the regular food. Otherwise yes it can have the opposite effect

| I think even if it doesn't look like your puppy is dehydrated, it is very likely that she is or will be soon. Going 7 times a day is bad enough but with some diarrhea, I think this needs to be resolved now even if that means prescription food. Has the vet talked about something like I/D for awhile (if you don't want to do homecooked)? I would just be very nervous to let this go on because dehydration leads to electrolyte imbalance and then cardiac arrest. She also can't be feeling the best even if she isn't showing it...

| Thank you all! I spoke with the vet just now and we are going to switch both dogs to Hills ID right away. Our 6 month old is going back on the meds for a week and if she develops diarehha once we stop the meds, they are going to do bloodwork and ultrasounds. He thinks she will respond favorably to this food (as she has had it during the transition) and thinks we may just have to accept that she'll need this prescription diet instead of food we can buy at the pet store. At this point, i'll buy her anything to keep her from pooping 7 times a day!! Thank you all again for your help and guidance!! |

| i have always read that the refridgerated probiotics are the best as they are active and having acidopholous, biffidus and fos is best too - i use dds plus from whole foods - 30 min before food |

| Probiotics are good. Teething can cause the runs. Did you try to withhold food for 24 hrs and then start again? You can also try human kaopectate 1/2 -1 ml per pound every 4 hrs. Once their GI tract gets off, it can take awhile to right itself. I also heard pumpkin ( not pie filling) works, but I have never tried it. |
