| Need Advice! Giardia test My puppy was positive for Giardia. She has a bad habit of eating poop so it took a while to get a negative fecal test back. She was on Metronidazole for several weeks and I have even given her Panacur for three days. I just got recent fecal test results and it looks like it is negative. I am just afraid that the Giardia could still be in her system because I have two other dogs I do not want to infect just in case and am thinking of giving her another round of Panacur. I would love to get some advice or hear experiences dealing with similar situations. Thanks.

| I would wait a week or 10 days and then give the Metronidazole and Panacur together for 5 days. That's what my Vet suggests and it worked on an adult female I purchased. Be sure to disinfect her area, wear gloves and keep feces cleaned up. I disinfected her area real good on day 4 and 5 of the meds. You may want to give her some yogurt to replace some good bacteria lost by so much antibiotic. Good luck! |

| My 6 year old yorkie just went to the vet this morning, I thought her anal glands had ruptured, but, anyway, they checked her for Giardia as she told me that humans can get that from dogs. Luckily hers came out negative.. |

| I am totally not an expert by any of stretch of the imagination, but my pup (fingers crossed) just got over giardia in one round of Metronidazole and 5 days of Panacur at the same time. Many things I've read say the metronidazole is only just a little over half effective against giardia, and the panacur is the best for fighting it. Add the two together and - WHAM! - adios nasty giardia! That's what my ved prescribed, and I was very happy to see so much information supporting that combo. But beyond that, I was really really obsessive about cleaning - more even than the vet said we had to be (she seemed pretty laid back about the whole thing at first). Immediately after each poo, I scooped Nikko up and put him in a fresh bath to wash his bum and paws with baby shampoo, then threw my shirt in the washer. I don't even know if he has an affinity for poo-eating because we never give him time to even turn around before picking him up. At the same time, my DH would run and scoop up all the poo then pour a bleach solution over the area. Teamwork! I know having two other dogs would make things more difficult, but good luck to you! I've read that older dogs can carry giardia in levels not dangerous to themselves as adults too, or can very easily get the giardia and not show symptoms till later, so I think sometimes when one dog in a house gets giardia, all the dogs get treated just to be on the safe side. Just type in giardia and your medication names in google or in the search function of this forum, and you'll find tons of articles with tons of info. Good luck. :-) Lauren & Nikko |

| I had two dogs when I bought a third from my groomer's which I know I shouldn't have, but it was more a rescue type situation. I brought the pup home then took her for her exam and fecal test. Fecal came out positive for Giardia. I immediately quarantined her to my boyfriend's house and had the other two tested twice and they came out negative. The puppy had a habit of eating its poop and being at home alone at my boyfriend's house did not help the situation but I had no choice. I've tried every kind of method to prevent her from eating her poop but I think it is a psychological thing and my boyfriend has had a very difficult time preventing this. She will deliberately hold her poop until he is not there (i.e.: goes to bed, gets in the shower) then eat it. My vet prescribed Metronidazole for two weeks. We ran another fecal and it was still positive. She was put on it at a higher dosage for another 3 or so weeks. I heard about Panacur so I asked my vet to give to her along with the Metronidazole and she gave me a prescription for 3 days. Her last fecal test did come back negative (she still eats poop but I'm hoping to curb this bad habit once she is back at home with me) but I want to give her another round of Panacur just to be safe.
