| A bladder infection now? Hi everyone. You probably know my story... my little girl had surgery on Friday to have a mast cell tumor removed. She did really well with the surgery and incision is healing nicey. Last night (monday) I noticed she kept running outside to pee... So this morning she was doing the same, and I put a cup under her hoping to get a sample of it to take to my vet, but it was just a few little drops each time... I felt so bad... anyway, called vet and took her in and they also tried to get a sample from her this morning but to no avail... they changed her antibiotic from her surgery she was on for infection to something called clavomax because the vet thinks its maybe a uti or cyrstals... I am home today trying to collect a sample, but she wont let me. She either wont do it when she seems me coming with the cup, or the two times I caught her they werent enough but a few drops of urine. My questions being, does this sound like a bladder infection to you all that have had experience with them? How long should I start to notice an improvement with her on the new antibiotic if that is what it is?? Thanks!!! |

| It could be a UTI. Did your vet try to do a cystocentesis? That would probably be the best way in this case.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh poor little thing, bladder infections can be extremely painful, hopefully you caught it soon enough and the antibiotics will clear it up fast. The pain can feel like an extreem urge to urinate, even though there are only a few drops, so this is probably why your not having much luck catching any. I've had great results with antibiotics and within 24 hours pain was greatly reduced. I do believe anytime you take antibiotics you should take yogurt, as you probably know antibiotics kill "good" bacteria as well as bad, so yogurt can reintroduce the good bacteria into the system, continue the yogurt for a few days after treatment of the antibiotics has stopped. Make sure you find a plain yogurt with live culture, no sugar or sugar substitute added. Hope she recovers quickly.

| okay... my mind is going here... here's a stupid question... I just remembered that my dog got into a dirty diaper (with poop!) about two days ago... and she ate some!! Could that have caused a uti? by ingesting ecoli or something????? |

I don't know, this would be important information to give your vet, especially since her immune system has been compromised. I thought e-coli infections generally had to do more with vomiting and diarrhea, but I would still give the vet this information.

| I just noticed you are from Chandler, AZ... we live in Glendale!! You will have to let me know what breeder you use for your puppies if you have had good luck. This little girl has had a lot of health problems unfortunately! But we love her!!!! You are right, I dont think she would get a bladder infection from digesting it, she would have had to get it "down" there somehow!! Who knows, maybe she rubbed herself where one of the other dogs pooped! I dont know, how they get them... I am just guessing... |

I think you are thinking about bacteria from the feces getting in the urethra and I know this can cause an infection as well as bacteria from other sources, however the way it was explained to me is that we harbor these bacteria at all times, and it's when the immune system has been compromised that the bad bacteria can get flourish, and an infection sets in.

| Well that would probably have to do with her surgery then. I hope we have her for a very long time, but unfortunately if that doesnt happen, if its okay with you I would love to have your breeder info .... |
