| Who's Had Femoral Head Ostectomy I would like to know who all has had this done to their dogs? How old was your dog at the time? How much does your dog weight? How long ago was the surgery? Did your dog return to normal active function?

| Our Ripley had this surgery years ago - I don't remember exactly when, but it was at least 8-10 years ago. She is a Pom mix, and has really shallow hip sockets. She tangled with a wheeled chair in our kitchen and dislocated her hip, and the vet was not able to get it to stay in again. She was probably around 3-5 when she had the surgery and weighed around 7lbs. She walked on 3 legs for a few weeks, but gradually she started using the 4th leg and within a couple of months you would never know she had had a problem (once all the hair on her hip grew back in ) She is now 13-14 yrs old and never seems to have a probem with it - no limping or pain indications. She has slowed down and seems a bit stiffer over all due to her age, but nothing particular to her hip surgery. We honestly expected to have to do her other hip at some point because the sockets are so shallow the vet felt that the other one would come out at some point too, but so far we haven't had to. I would definitely do it again, if her overall health allowed for the risk (at her age now).

| Carley had this done July of last year. She has had a great recovery, she does all she did before. The vet told us we would probably not be able to tell the difference in her after a full recovery, but that she always would. He said she would not be able to jump up on the couch and such, but she does...we try to keep her from doing too much jumping up and down on things, but she is very, very active and we have a hard time with this. The hardest thing about it all,(besides worrying about her)was keeping her off the leg and not doing to much right after the surgery. Carley is now 2 1/2 years old and weighs about 11 lbs.

| Lulu was 1 yr. old almost 5 lbs. She had her surgery 2 yrs. ago. She can run really well (you would never know) but her slow walking she hops. And that was because the vet could not finish because of the anesthesia. So he made the choice to stop.

| from what the vet told us is that when she was under the anesthesia, her vital signs were deteriorating. So he had to make the decision to go on with the surgery or stop. He knew if he tried to continue, she would have died so he decided to stop. And that's why she has a hop only when she slow walks or when she is on a real grassy area. Other than that, she can run fine (you would never know) and as for jumping, she was always a jumper and even though the vet told me not to let her (ha) I can't control that.

| I am glad too! I had no idea that this is so common with yorkies! My baby was fine, running around in the yard when I noticed she was holding her back leg up. At first I thought it was something in the pad of her foot. Since this happened in the evening, the next morn. I took her to the vet when I saw she couldn't walk. I was devestated when I saw the x-rays and scared when they told me she had to have surgery. The first 2 days when she came home she just layed in her bed. I had to carry her outside to potty. And then it was short walks to force her to use the leg. It was sad to see her walking on 3 legs. It took about 2 weeks for her to start using all her legs. I hope this helps, and your baby will be fine, but I know you will still worry, we all do. I will be praying for your baby and wishing you all well. Let me know how you do.
