Double Post about Dry Eye - No Tears I posted this on the Health section but wanted to see if anyone here has experienced this. So after adopting Kobe - we noticed this gooey greenish mucous in his eyes and we found out at his first well visit that he doesn't produce any tears. We will forever have to administer drops to his eyes at least twice a day. Anyone else going through the same thing? How can you not produce tears? I sometimes wonder if this is why his owner relinquished him, maybe it was too much for her to handle? I'll say this much, I saw him listed a day before I found him and she nonchalantly said that he was adopted. My Kobe was the very same dog that as listed on petfinder.org and same owner. Anywho, anyone else going through this? We received two referrals with the same outcome. He can see fine, we just have to clean out that gooky stuff each morning and before he goes to bed. It can get pretty cloudy for him at times and his poor eyes are always super red. I wish he didn't have to go through that!

I have had an experince with the dry eye. I bought a male yorkie for $1500 that had a dry eye from no tears. This is a genetic defect. There is really no cure for this. I use Terramycin ointment once a day and Puralube several times a day to keep the eye lubricated. Without the ointments that eye is very dry and uncomfortable to your dog. That is why the eye turns red and cloudy looking. There is a very expensive surgery to rebuild the tear duck but the chances of the surgery working are slim. The other option my vet gave me was to have the eye removed. I choose to do the ointment as often as needed to keep him comfortable.

Thanks so much. I have to say that he is so sweet and patient and it really melts my heart how he lets me put the drops in his eyes. I know it must feel good for him when I do! Poor little guy! Thanks so much!

Dry eye Trinket also has a dry eye. I take her to an opthamologist every 6 months. Her treatment consists of a salve, Tacroulimus, 2 x's a day, and pilocarpine orally 2x' a week. It is usually a genetic disorder that deminishes most secretions. The pilocarpine acts on the sympathatic system and increases the secretion. It is a life long event but Trinket doesn't seem to mind. I will tell you this, I was taking her to a vet that almost cost her an eye with bad treatment. It took a dog opthamologist to get tears flowing in her eyes again, of course that is with medication adjustments along the way. Trinket and I wish your baby health and please keep us informed as to progress. Last edited by trinket1; 10-14-2008 at 05:42 PM.
