| Heat Cycle Question - HELP! Okay everyone.. I have never had a female dog before so I am completely lost. About 3..? weeks ago, I noticed that Maggie was bleeding a little - just a couple of drops here and there. I had heard that older dogs don't bleed that much so I assumed she was in heat. We kept her on a leash outside and I didn't take her to the dog park for 2 weeks (I had it marked on my calendar). I waited 2 whole weeks so I thought I was in the clear, right? Well.. today she started bleeding a LOT more - not unusually so but more than I had seen or thought she would bleed. SO she's back in the diaper. What does this mean? Is she in heat? If she's in heat now, why was she bleeding 3 weeks ago? Is she in the beginning of the heat, or the middle? We were planning to get her spayed but then she went into heat so we had to wait and I was literally going to call and make the appointment tomorrow! What do I do? How long should I wait before having her spayed? HELP!

| I'd call the vet for sure. You say she's older, how old? Has she ever been bred? Unspayed, unbred dogs run a high risk of pyometria, a uterine infection that can kill if left untreated. Please call your vet asap. I hope it's not that, but it'd be good to make sure. Hugs to you both!

| She is 4 years old, we just got her in May though. And yes she has been bred but as far as I know, only once - last November. I looked up the symptoms of Pyometra. I don't see any yellow pus or mucus, it's mainly all blood. She's also been eating, drinking, and using the bathroom normally.

| I wonder what it could be then?!?! Baffling! I hope it's nothing, just a weird cycle or something It would probably be good to call the vet about it and see what they think it could be. Hugs to you both!

| Thanks for all your help! So do you think we should wait two weeks from yesterday to get her spayed? Is that a safe assumption?

| You might want to check out Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies. for great information (and pictures) about a dog's heat cycle...it's a very informative site. |

| I've read all of those but none of them give me a definitive answer. I was just wondering if there was anyone with experience who could tell me for sure. Thanks for the website though!

| Update Last night Maggie threw up a couple of times. We thought maybe she was just feeling kinda down so we let her rest. After an hour or so, we gave the dogs dinner. Well she threw that up also. I called the emergency vet and they said to just keep an eye on her unless she seemed to drastically change. We took her temperature and it was normal. The weird thing was that she wasn't acting differently at all! She was happy and peppy as normal, so I didn't feel the need to take her in. She threw up during the night and also after breakfast so we decided to take her in to our normal vet. She told us that sometimes dogs just get sick , so she prescribed some anti-nausea medicine and some antibiotics because she was concerned about a possible uterine infection. We got home and Franklin had thrown up a couple of times too so now they are both on the anti-nausea medicine. Hopefully everyone is okay!

| Hm... I hope everything is ok! When Lilly was in heat it was longer than just 2 weeks.
