| diarrhea! help my yorkie has diarrhea! i'm not sure what to do. i recently started taking my 4 month old puppy out for walks around my neighborhood. everytime i take him out for a walk, he would always eat and sniff everything thats lying around on the ground. i think i even caught him eat an earthworm! whether it's leaves, bark, dirt or paper, he puts it in his mouth. do you all think this can cause him to get diarrhea? how can i train him not to eat what's lying on the ground when i take him out for walks? PLEASE HELP! I'M A WORRIED DAD! |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | The advice I've heard for treating diarreah is to feed them nothing for 24 hours, then feed a bland diet. Boiled chicken and rice is one popular choice. It's important to make sure they are well hydrated. And, yeah, I would think eating strange things could do it. I've got a lab that runs into the same thing a lot. Try teaching your pup a "leave it" command. On leash, walk by something they want and say "leave it." Don't allow them to go near it. Keep practicing. It's an important lesson.

| thanks maya. Yes it is late here. I will have to take him to the vet tomorrow am. I really hope it's not a virus. He had 5 rounds of diarrhea within an hour. He's asleep right now. I know I'll be up all night worrying about him. My poor baby! |

I gave her cottage cheese with her meds and boiled chicken and rice .... also give him some Pidealight (I think I spelled that wrong) so he does not dehydrate ..... other then that .... I hope he can get some rest tonight .... and see the Vet in the morning ..... make sure his gums don't turn white ..... I gave Maya a drop of honey for that ..... Hope he fells better soon .... Hope this helps .....

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What is his weight? If he is small, do not withhold food for very long or you may have a very dangerous situation on your hands. Also, don't give just chicken (or just protein) or you'll very quickly constipate your pup and it won't be good at all. When having digestive problems (tummy or poo), really the easiest thing for them and the best way to settle their system is carbs. Give canned/sliced or fresh mashed potatoes with just a bit of butter - carbs will settle the tummy, are quickly absorbed, give instant energy, and are usually appetizing. I always, always keep canned/sliced pototoes on hand for emergencies. You can also use white rice, but I've found my dogs just aren't big fans. You really need to check your dogs gums and ensure that they're pink - if they're not, he is dehydrated and you probably need to get to the vet ASAP. Puppies can go down FAST with diarrhea, so please be careful. He may have eaten something on his walk - but he also may have a parasite and could need medication.
