| puppy hasn't poo'd Hi guys, i'm hoping you can help me. I just got a new puppy yesterday and 32+ hours later he still hasn't poo'd. He has peed 4 or 5 times but thats it. Should I be concerned or is this normal? I realize that he may be stressed from the flight and being in a new environment and he seems fine otherwise (he had a vet visit today and apart from a slight ear infection got a clean bill of health). He is 5 months old, 3 lbs, and cute as a button. He hasn't really eaten much. He will not really eat the food that he came with but did eat some chicken that i hand fed him. He does not appear listless or anything like that. If any of you have any advice I would appreciate it. I was hoping to get a stool sample to take to the vet so his physical would be complete, and in general just don't want him to feel poorly. Thanks QBOE |

| I would have thought he'd poo by now. I'm sure someone with some more experience on here will have some suggestions, do a search and you'll come up with some ideas. Hoping for poo soon!!!

| I know that some breeders don't feed the dog before shipping, so he may be pretty empty and not have eaten enough to make a good poo. Is his stomach distended or hard? The vet exam should have caught this if there was a serious problem. Try feeding a little white rice mixed with a little chicken baby food, or small pieces of roasted chicken (no skin). See if he will eat a larger quantity. If nothing by tomorrow afternoon, I'd call the vet.

| i'm going to go to the grocery store now and get some rice. I'll let you guys know how he is doing tomorrow. Thanks for all the advice, as a new mommy i sure appreciate it! Incidentally, the vet did check his stomach but pronouced him fine. The only thing that he said was that he had a slight yeast infection in his ears. We got drops and i'll be putting them in 2x a day for the next ten days. Course since i didn't have a stool sample to bring in there could be something there I suppose that is causing issues. He ate approx. a 1/3 cup of food today and drank his water. Hopefully all will be well. |

| Update:::: He still hasn't poo'd yet. I measured his food and he ate 1/3rd of a cup. Today i abandoned the kibble that he came with and fed him chicken and rice. He ate it all but still nothing. His tummy does not feel hard and he is alert and extremely playful. I called the vets office and they said that if he hasn't gone by monday or if his stomach feels hard, or if he becomes sluggish / lethargic or acts like he is in pain then to bring him in immediately. Not sure though if I will manage to make it that long without having a nervous breakdown...everytime I leave the room I rush back in and check to see if he has done his business yet....I must look crazy to the neighbors lol. They also recommended that I go to the health food store and buy some psyllum husk or try pumpkin. I tried to get him to eat the pumpkin but he wasn't very interested in it. So I guess I'll try that in the morning. Wish me luck. |

| he finally poo'd - HELP!!!!!! Ok guys...seems like my poor little guy is having a rough time of it. He finally poo'd and three things happened. (1) he went on my carpet...gross but nothing that nature's miracle couldn't fix. (2) it was runny and looked like diarreah sp? (3) GROSS....THERE WERE LONG WHITE WRIGGLING WORMS IN IT.... I scooped up a sample to take to the vet...hopefully I can find someone open in the morning. Any advice??? He seems to be happy and not feeling bad but i'm wondering if there is something that I can give him before then to try and help him out. Between that and the ear infection I really don't know what else to do. I'm worn out from the drama today so i guess we'll be going to bed now. |

| UGGGGGHHHH, I hate vets right about now....can't find a single one (including my own) that is open right now. So far three have called me back but don't think its enough of an emergency for them to come in today to check his stool sample and give him some meds. I feel so bad for my baby right now. Why on earth isn't there a 24 hr 7 day a week vet hospital???? Heck they could charge whatever price they wanted because people would bring their babies in no matter what and would just be grateful that there was a service provider available who cared enough to be open. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Did you check for an emergency vet hospital? We have several of those and they are open 24/7 365 days a year.

| I checked through the phone book and yellow pages....nothing in my area that I can find. A couple of the vet clinics that called me back keep saying not to worry, that it is probably tapeworms (based on my description) and that he can be seen on monday and that it is not that serious. I'm unhappy but as a lost as to alternatives right now. |

| I think your vet is right -- this is nothing to worry about today, and you can get it fixed tomorrow. Puppies with worms are so common, and if he is acting fine, then he probably is fine. The worms will give him a loose stool, so that is consistent. If you are continuing to feed the rice/chicken, mix a little of his kibble in with it. They really need all the nutrients in the kibble, and you can gradually switch him back to a mostly (or all) kibble diet. Pumpkin is for both diarrhea and constipation. A little will slow down the digestion and stop diarrhea -- a lot will provide enough fiber to cure constipation. I can never get mine to eat enough to do any good one way or the other. But it is a good natural remedy. Not to gross you out, but once you get him on meds for the worms, be sure to wash all of his bedding really well in hot water. The worms can crawl out and lay eggs on the outside of the puppy, which get on the bedding and then he can reinfect himself. Also, you will need to be extra careful (and quick) to clean up all his messes. Dogs can pick up worms by just putting their nose on stool with worms or eggs in it. Fortunately, the treatment is pretty simple and effective. Good luck.

| Thanks guys for all of the help. I got him in to the vet this morning and they gave me a pill to give him for the worms along with something called metronidazole.....not sure what thats is (its a liquid) but they said that I need to give it to him twice a day to clear up the excess yeast they found in his stool sample. Poor baby is drowning in meds right now....between the two times a day drops for the yeast infection in his ears, the heartworm tablet I had to give him today (couldn't fool him into eating the chewable), the pill for the tapeworm, and the metronidazole twice daily i'm gonna have to buy him a medicine cabinet (LOL). He's perky and in good spirits though so I guess all will be well. I'll start mixing kibble in with the rice and chicken tonite so all should be well. |
