| My Poor Baby Zoey something is wrong It started two weeks ago. Hubby and I went on vacation for only 3 days and It was the first time I ever had to board her. She is l3 mos. and I boarded her with my other two yorkies in a luxury suite. When I picked her up, she seemed fine and excited to see us, but the next day she just wasn't herself - very lethargic. So I took her back to the vet, they did bloodwork and said everything was ok and because she had had coilitis a month ago, they thought the stress of being boarded triggered another episode even though she had none of the symptoms (vomiting or loose stools) they gave her a shot and put her on Metroidazole two times a day and told me I should notice a big improvement that night. Well I didn''t, if anything she was getting worse. That morning I noticed her nose was running (no cough) she was trembling and walking really slow and hunched just like eyeore. Her eyes were glassy too. So at 7am I am at the vets office again. This time I drop her off so they can observe her. They call and tell me it must be a bacterial infection. Not only was her nose running, her right eye was running too. They gave her an antiobiotic shot and sent me home with amoxicillian. Her eye watered for 3 days and then stopped and no more runny nose and her appetite is good, but something is still not right! Now, when I go to pick her up she cries and looks at me like why did you hurt me? She is still somewhat lethargic. She goes in her Sherpa bag and just sleeps which is unusual for her since she is always following me around and always with the other dogs. She doesn't even want to go outside and play, which she loves to do. I am so worried about her. I am just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced anything similiar. And yes, we will be going back to the vet - something is not right! |

| RE: Poor Baby Zoey Hi! We had a similar problem with our little bundle of joy. Happened after a weekend boarding trip. When we picked her up she was fine, excited to see us, etc. We actually have two girls and only one ended up acting similar to yours after the weekend of being boarded. Roxie was very lethargic, wouldn't eat, would only attempt to drink and when she did, she would throw it up. She only wanted to sleep - which is VERY unlike a puppy! I took both pups in because I was concerned it was something like kennel cough and that they would both end up with it. As it turns out Roxie had gastroenteritis. We had to give her antibiotics, special food (Science Diet i/d) and limit how much she ate for a couple of days. We now feed both of them the dry Science Diet i/d and after we return from a trip where they have been boarded we make sure they don't gorge themselves which is what brought on the gastroenteritis. May not entirely be the same situation as yours, but maybe it will help. Good luck! |

| Have you followed up with the vet again? It is so hard to watch them be lethargic and unlike themselves. I'm wondering what her diet is and if there is also something bothering her intestinally - I would see the vet again. Have they ran blood tests, etc?

| RE: Poor Baby Zoey Prior to the Science Diet i/d they were on what the breeder we got them from had them on which was Purina Puppy or something like that. I had planned to switch them after they were a year (which they just turned a year on Saturday, August 2nd ) but had to sooner due to the gastro problem Roxie had. The vet did run tests and they both have been back since and all is well now. Now when we board them and upon returning home, we are careful not to let them (especially Roxie) gorge herself and feed them slowly. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This is strange. Did you palpate (touch/push) her entire body to see if there were any areas of tenderness/pain? I wonder if she strained/hurt/pulled something? But, appetite/thirst/stools/vomiting - ALL of that is fine? There is only lethargy, glassy-eyes, and some flinching? I guess it makes me thinks she is pain somewhere, or she is fighting something. How is she this morning?

| RE: Poor Baby Zoey My Roxie is fine! This occurred months ago and all is completely fine and good now. I was just replying to the original post and after the fact realized the original post was from May or something. Anyway, as soon as we realized something was wrong with ours we took her to the vet immediately. They are no longer boarded at the original place that they were boarded at and she came home and became sick. The vet diagnosed her with Gastroenteritis and his treatment plan worked and she is in tip-top shape now. Thanks for your concern, I do appreciate it. |

| She has been to the vet twice now for this! And i will be taking her back Monday morning again because I know something is not right and It just kills me to see her like this.. As of this morn. I stopped giving her the penicillan and she seems to be much better without it. She hasn't gone in her crate to hide like she has been doing, she is even following me around like usual. She does seem to be somewhat sore on one side of her body, but I thought that was because of the shots they gave her each time I took her in. Also, where I board her is at my vets they have a beautiful new wing for boarding and I took a tour of the facility before I boarded them and I also boarded my other babies there before and never had any problems. I don't want to take her to the emergency vet here because each time I had to do that, they mis-diagnosed and what they did or told me to do caused her more harm and pain. Thank you all for your suggestions I am going to mention that to my vet when I see him. |

| Perhaps this could have been a reaction to the vaccinations....

| That's interesting that without the penicillin that she's doing better - it seems odd that some of her symptoms cleared up with it, but now today without it she is better. I understand why you would want to go back to your regular vet, especially if the she seems a bit better today. Please update us tomorrow. I'll say a little prayer for Zoey. Praying she improves quickly and the vet can figure out exactly what is going on.

She could have had a reaction to the bordatella vaccine and maybe they didn't even realize it while being boarded. Where is she sore?

| She did have bordetella shot when she was boarded. Then when I took her to the vet the first time they gave her a shot CERENIA 0.2 ML. and when they gave her that how she screamed and cried. Vet said that it would help her with stress and at that time vomiting. The second time I took her they said it was a bacterial infection (eyes running and nose) so they gave her a shot of BAYTRIL AND PUT HER ON AMOXICILLIAN. she has alot more energy today and looks alot better, but her mouth and neck area, and sides seem to be very tender. I will let you know tomorrow how she is doing when I go back to vet. I think this time I am going to request they take an x-ray. Thanks for your concern |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm - an allergic reaction in dogs often manifests as swollen face, cheeks - so I'm wondering if she had a reaction to something - which could explain the tenderness and even the eyes watering - and the glassy eyes. For example, after a vaccine - you watch for extreme lethargy, white gums, swollen cheeks/face - which would mean a reaction.
