Scab like places on back legs??? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hank has had these Scab-like spots on his back leg. They werent very noticable until he was shaved and they are still kind of hard to see. But one is quarter sized and the other is about the size of a nickle and they havent changed in size or color. I have no clue what they are. I have been using the Soothe shampoo on him for at least a month. It made the rest of his body stop itching, and he only scratches/flea bites at them like once or twice a day. I was just wondering if any of you ladies have experienced this or knows what it is!
I can post some pics of them but it will be tomorrow

If you could get some close ups of the scabs that may be helpful. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here and they may know what you are dealing with,

It sounds like he could have a staph infection. They are pretty common in dogs with allergies. My poor Lady has been battling staph for several months mainly because of her diabetes and weak immune system.

I've attached a picture. Is this what it looks like?

Are they thick and flaky? That is the way his are. They dont smell so i dont think that it's yeast, but i have no clue.

Yes, they are flaky. It almost looks like dandruff.

Staph infections can be treated with antibiotics like Cephalexin, but they tend to come back once the antibiotics are finished. That's what happened with Lady. I am now battling them with a medicated shampoo (Chlorihexiderm) and benzoil peroxide which is Clearasil. If he's only got a couple of spots, I'd try Clearasil. It works wonders.

Does he have allergies? A fish oil supplement like 3V caps is helpful, too.

Oh thank you so much for the advice! I will be going strait to wal mart as soon as i am off work! I really hope it clears. I made and appt with the vet for my mom's dog and i am just going to take hank as well.

About the allergies. I dont know. He is just now 4 months adn i havent seen any other skin, eye, or mucus membrane irritations! He has been on the same food since i got him, but he has also had these spots since i got him. so i very well may be his food!

I didn't realize he was just a puppy. He's probably to young to have built up antibodies and be allergic. If he's had the spots since you got him, you need to have them checked by a vet. It could still be staph, but it's best to get him checked out.

I promise im not a negligent momma. I was washing him with the Soothe Shampoo and his skin was getting better, but he was so fluffy i could feel the rough spot on his leg but i didnt realize the size or what it looked like untill the groomer shaved him. So i continued the Soothe shampoo on the spots, but no improvement.

I don't wanna' spook you... because the spots could be a million different things....

But your Hank is still just a baby isn't he? (I'm sorry, I've not seen your posts before so wasn't sure) - - - Anyway, my sister just purchased a little Yorkie who is now about 16 weeks old.... she took him in to the vet because he had some "itchy spots" just like what you're describing, near his underbelly, one over his hip and one on his left side.

The vet immediately did a skin scraping and came back that the puppy boy has demodex ...

Poor thing..... of course it can be treated... but from what the vet says, it sure can take a long time to treat, and possibly several rounds required...

She felt just horrible... kept saying she's a "bad mom".... but the truth of it is, that the demodex is a type of mite that is passed on from mother to pup.... so there was no way to prevent it, (except for the breeder NOT to have bred the mom) - or even know it existed until the pup had this outbreak.

My sister did notify the breeder, since the demodex definitely came from the pup's mom (and is passed on to ANY and ALL pups that mama produces, as I understand it) - - - so HOPEFULLY, she'll not breed this mommy again.

I would take your baby in to your vet - just for a quick exam.... (skin scraping costs about 25.00 and is quick.... not exactly painless, but quick and you'll have immediate results)... before you try different things that may or may not have a negative result with the "spots"...

I'm sure the spots are nothing.... but always best to be certain...

AAAAAAHHHHH! oh god! now im really worried! we are going to the vet THIS WEEK.

Don't get all freaked out now... I'd say that demodex would be a "worse case scenario".... and even if it WERE demodex... it's not like it's some kinda' death sentence... he'll be fine

Oh, and in case I didn't mention it earlier... demodex is NOT contagious from one animal to another.... (ONLY passed on from mother to pup) - or from canine to human... so don't stress over that...

Let us know how his vet visit goes!!

If he has had fleas he could be allergic to flea bites. Or it could be demodex mites. My Chachi has had that and it is treatable. It just usually takes some time and several treatments

I was showing it to my mom (when your scared who's the first person you run to!) And we were thinking of the best way to describe it. Is Demodex like a wart. Because that is exactly what it's like on his skin. I looks like a medium sized wart!

well i do have some comfort. It hasn't gotten any bigger. so it's not growing!
