hugs going your way! our puggy lived his last year or so blind. I was careful to leave furniture where it had been (no dramatic rearranging!) and paid special attention to whether or not he found his food. We lost him of liver failure after 14 loving and adventurous years. This is a special time for your sweet companion--enjoy it.

Many, many hugs to you and Phoebe. She sounds like a fighter. My first thought when I saw her pic was just as Chattiesmom said - Regal. She is absolutely gorgeous. Prayers to you, Phoebe, that the Dr. will tell you that you can go home and enjoy alot more time with your family.

She has an appointment with the vet today at 1:45. I am so sad that she is deteriorating. She has survived cancer and now diabetes. I guess I don't really need any help, just some hugs! Here is her pic back in her glory days!
I know exactly how you feel. My non yorkie Spicy has gone slowly blind. She will be 9 in Oct. She is 3.5 lbs of pure Papillion. I see her bump into things now and want to carry her everywhere. The vet said it is not a good idea but make her adjust and learn to move more slowly and be more careful. I have a fish pond outside and worry about it but she grew up around it so as long as I watch her she should be OK. It took awhile to get used to the light blue cloudy look in her eyes. She has tripped twice going down stairs and it tears my heart out ot not pick her up and carry her. I know though it is not really in her best interest to do it.

I joke to people I will be buying her a eye seeing person soon.

She still loves life and enjoys her treats that I literally put in her mouth as she cannot see them.

Your little girl is beautiful and just be happy you will be able to help her age gracefully.

Hugs to you and her,

Jeri

Phoebe is beautiful!!! I am sorry, I know it is painful and hurts your heart to see her lose functions. Have faith that she will continue to do well. I have a Bichon who just turned 14 and he lost his sight completely almost 1 1/2 years ago, and he has been diabetic over 2 years now and on 2x insulin shots as well. He just recently began to lose his hearing as well. It is hard to watch them lose their sight, but they adapt very well! Bailey (my boy) learned to use his nose very well to get around! I don't change things around in the house much, if I do, I work with him for a couple days to let him know what is different, and he adapts quickly. Just wanted to offer you support and hugs and we understand how you are feeling

If it's any consolation, most diabetic dogs go blind and most within the first 6-9 months after diagnosis while they may still not be regulated and have high blood sugar. Has Phoebe recently been diagnosed?

My Lady has been a diabetic for seven years. She is one of the rare few who has kept her eyesight. I learned to check her blood sugar myself early on which I highly recommend. It is the key to successfully managing diabetes and avoiding the physical complications of the disease. Lady still has no kidney damage or any of the other classic problems associated with diabetes.

Schnauzers especially are prone to diabetes and loss of eyesight. They have "fatty" blood (high lipids) which can collect behind the eye.

Do take her to the vet and make sure she is regulated. High blood sugar causes all sorts of problems besides blindness. If she is recently diagnosed, she should be going in for regular curves if you aren't checking her blood sugar at home.
