| I have a question about ID Prescription Dog Food Maggie has been diagnosed with liver shunt following the analysis of a kidney stone (ammonium urate) and the stats of her bile acid tests. My vet is emailing Dr. Tobias to get her recommendations. She is going to be putting her on ID Prescription Food and also Lacticade (don't know if I'm spelling that correctly.) Can you give me some idea of my monthly expense for the food and the medicine? I think she will be giving her the canned, not the dry kibble. Maggie's bile acid test was 162/460. Her blood panel was normal. She was eating Merrick's Grammy's Pot Pie - the vet put her on that last month, before we knew it was liver shunt. She has not been doing well on it, lethargic and glazed eyes. I took her off of it myself last week, started giving her yogurt, veggies and a bit of cottage cheese. She is a different dog, zipping around the house full of energy, not listless, not sleeping all the time like she was. The bile testing was done while she was eating that food, I wonder if the numbers would have been different had she not been eating it. From what I've read, it seems that if we can do surgery it is best option for her. I read that the success rate is 85%, that's very good, but what I'm not reading is what percentage of dogs survive the surgery. I'm terrified that she will die in surgery. She's a young dog, only 2, and in good shape except for this. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks so much. Jan and Mags You can see pictures of her and her new adopted sister, Mollie at my blog pages - all the latest from heavensville... If you visit be sure and click on the dogs pictures so you can see them up close. You have to scroll down a bit for their pictures... |

| I'm sorry for the bad news. ID is not a good choice for a liver compromised dog. Are you sure it isn't LD? LD canned is good but I don't know how much it will be a month. How does the vet know it is a shunt and not MVD?

| Oops typo Sorry, it is LD. She said because the blood panel was normal she doesn't think it's MVD. Does that make sense? I know so little about this, I'm reading a lot though. |

| I am so sorry about the liver shunt diagnosis. Our speaker on nutrition at the KC meet-up talked in depth about vet prescription food and how terrible it is. All the crappy kibble (and canned foods) out there contain a high sugar content which is why when you try to transition your pup onto something good they might turn their nose up at it. Yogurt is fantastic - please keep doing that. I would highly recommend a raw diet for her; lower in protein, such as The Honest Kitchen. Please so some research on foods, particularly through holistic websites. Hope things turn out well for you. Sending prayers and hugs....

| I've never heard that and would be hesitant to say it is shunt without further testing. The numbers do indicate shunt but MVD is not impossible.

| The survival rate at the University of Tennessee according to their website is over 95%. Canned L/D is better than dry because the dry contains ethoxyquin. If you get a prescription from your vet for the lactulose, it is very cheap at Costco, and the food isn't anymore expensive than Merricks...Did the vet put her on any supplements like Denosyl or Milk thistle?

| My two are both on W/D and I've bought I/D before...I think they all cost the same~ the cans are almost $2 each here; I think we buy 6 cans for almost $11. The 10 lb bag of dry food costs us about $18 I think. And I've bought it from 3 different vets here and one in N. CA and they're all pretty close in price. Before I had Madison, one can lasted Max 3 days and the dry food lasted a long time. I only give him about 1/3 of a can per day and I give him maybe 1/3 cup of the kibble as "snacks" throughout the day. Good luck with your baby! It sounds like you have a good vet, which is always a good thing!

| Thanks everybody for the good information I do have a good vet. Women vets are so nurturing, in my opinion. She is very caring. If you all want to see pictures of Maggie and Mollie, you can access them on my blog at all the latest from heavensville... If you click on the pictures, they enlarge. I just got Mollie last week, if you scroll down you will see several pictures. I lost my Munchie in March, she was my first Yorkie, and lived eleven years, not nearly long enough. I was heartbroken when she died, so I'm really happy to have two dogs again. I think they are both just precious, of course I'm a really proud Yorkie mom, as you all are... |

Oh my goodness!!! Your babies are STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL! I couldn't help myself and went thru your whole blog until I realized I'm supposed to be outside getting some SUN, LOL! Your "fleurs" are so beautiful! I miss mine so much it almost made me cry looking at yours! NOTHING grows here (or at least, nothing like that) and I'm soooo tired of it. I hope you don't mind; I bookmarked your blog; your photos are so pretty and it made me feel like I was in that pretty little garden for awhile. I'm sure sorry about the liver shunt issue; I don't know much about it, so I guess I should read some....but first, my articles I've taken out of my Vanity Fairs for the last couple of months...have to get those out of here, LOL! OH...and I've got M&M's too...only the boy variety

| I'm glad you enjoyed your visit.. Sure, you can visit me anytime - I blog nonsense daily. I don't blog about the sad things, like Maggie's liver shunt. I just have faith that we will get her well. My index pages are Munchie Business & Friends... - if you go that page, you will see several tabs on the right, you can click on them and you will be able to read quite a bit about me. I have scrapbooking pages at Milly Scraps, a labor of love... - i'm milly, because i have daughter-in-laws, they call me milly, i call them dilly - that's how i got the name milly scraps. Thanks for the nice words, my babies are beautiful, at least to me they are. |
