Default Vomiting/Diarrhea :(

Hi my name's Kendra and my 3 year old yorkie's name is Sam. When he was a puppy I was on here daily b/c he suffered pneumonia for 3 months! After he recovered I didn't want to come back on here b/c it brought up all those bad memories of being in and out of the hospital and seeing him suffer

Quick background of my current situation:
Moving and having a baby (due July9)

Now Sam is not doing well and I wanted to get some advice...

Last Wednesday, my grandmother and I packed mine and my husband's apt all day and Sam was fine. Normal carrot treat in the morning and ate his food. That evening he vomited yellow bile. He has done this many times before if he hasn't eaten so I wasn't worried. Thursday he was fine all day, but I did notice he was sleeping a lot on our couch during the day and throughout the night (he usually sleeps with us every night). I just thought maybe he was stressed with all the boxes in our 1 bedroom apt and that was his way of showing us he was mad So Friday I noticed he would only take his carrot in the morning, but didn't eat any of his food all day. My husband and I went out to eat that evening and we always give him a carrot before we leave...when we came back, the carrot was still there and he was in the process of vomiting. He threw up my hair...looked a like a hairball from a cat with saliva and bile. By the way, his stools had been normal this whole time. Anyway, he wouldn't eat his food or any treats and threw up 2 more times. We gave him pepto bismol and I was thinking that maybe he was just really stressed with the move and the baby coming, so I decided to take him to my moms. I used to live with her when I first got him and so he's familiar with her house. I even said "do you want to go to grandma's?" and he perked right up. Once we got there he was a totally different dog and ate all his food plus a carrot. He kept this down for 5 hours and about 4am he threw it all up. His stools started to become soft at this point. So the next morning he threw up about 2-3 more times. We gave him more pepto and the vomiting stopped until we got back from the shower and he threw up a ton of yellow bile...it was almost projectile. We took him to the emergency vet that night and they put the fluid under his skin to keep him hydrated, took and xray of his abdomen and said they couldn't see any blockages, but a lot of gas in his colon. That night he was drinking a ton of water and perked up a lot, but still not interested in his food. We were told to keep him off of food until the morning and then introduce bland foods slowly. They also put him on Flagyl once a day for 6 days. The next morning he woke up and ran right to his puppy pad and had dark loose stool with blood in it. I tried giving him rice and he ate a couple bites and then immediately threw it up again. After that I gave him his medicine and he kept that down, but had another bowel movement that looked the same with the dark blackish and blood. We took him back to the vet and has now been there since last night (Sunday night). They have him on fluids, antibiotics, pepcid, and anti-nausea meds. Yesterday they said he was very alert and seemed to be doing great. This morning they said his stomach is still tense and seems sore from all the vomiting and diarrhea. He isn't drinking or eating on his own so after dinner I'm going to bring him some chicken and rice and his own food to see if maybe he's just being picky. They really want him to eat to see if he keeps it down.

Side note: a couple weeks ago, he started licking my husband's and my feet obsessively while we would be laying around. He has NEVER done this before. We usually have to have something in our mouths for him to lick our face. I noticed him also licking the carpets a lot and then it just got worse once I got to my moms. That's why he was vomiting hair. The vet said this is a sign of nausea.

Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to give all the details in case anyone has ever experienced this before.

I will keep everyone updated and let you know how he's doing when I get back from visiting him tonight.

Thanks for listening!

Poor Sam I hope he feels better soon. My Simon goes through bouts like this with a horrible upset tummy and has to stay with the vet for fluids and antibiotics. He's always diagnosed with gastroenteritis and is usually better within a few days. I know how hard it is to watch him be so sick.

Please let us know an update and I hope he is 100% very soon~

Aww, poor little Sam - I hope he's doing better this evening!

My 2 boys went through similar bouts of the vomiting/diarrhea thing and both times it was because they ate something bad - Kalani ate part of a plastic mat under his x-pen and Pi'i ate some duck poop at the park Their tummies were real sensitive afterwards so I kept them on bland diets and gave them a dose of Pepcid as needed and eventually was able to get them back to normal.

Will say a prayer for your little one that it's just an upset tummy and that he'll be bouncing around real soon!

I went through something very similar last week with my Baby Zoey. I too had to rush her to the emergency vet and they injected her with fluid and gave me meds. for her vomiting and loose stools, they also put her on science diet AD. The next day, she still didn't look or act like her old self. Very blah and sleeping alot so I called my vet to have her checked out.

What he did was check her for pancreatitis. Thank god it was negative. They put her on an antibiotic for 5 days and after the second day she is back to her old self. Good luck - my prayers are with you.

Default Back from the vet after 5 hours :(

Thanks for all your replies. My mom, husband and I just returned from Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. We went tonight to our vet and Sam seemed to be doing bad again. His stomach was very sore and bloated, he had more diarrhea in the office, but no blood. The dr we spoke with scared us to death and told us to take him to Red Bank b/c his protein levels had dropped dramatically. He could be suffering from pancreatitis which is causing protein loss enteropathy. He looked so sad. We took him to Red Bank and the dr there was much more calm and made us feel more at ease. They are going to keep him on iv and antibiotic/pain meds and then perform a urine analysis and ultrasound tomorrow to confirm or rule out pancreatitis. She was saying that anything from pancreatitis to gastritis to an obstruction in bowel or inflammatory bowel disease can cause the protein levels to drop. I will know more tomorrow, but am praying I don't get a phone call tonight about any changes for the worse. I just want my baby to be ok and be able to meet his little sister that's on the way

I will be praying for your baby! Did they think he perhaps had Giardia since they were treating with Flagyl?

I read that they use flagyl to treat most intestinal illnesses. I haven't really researched that.

Default Waiting to hear from doctor

I am sitting here waiting to hear from the doctor and am praying it's better news. I didn't get any calls last night and they said no news is good news so that's a plus, but we'll see what the internist says when she calls. I will let you all know the update.

Last night I was on here until 130am doing research on pancreatitis and protein-losing enteropathy. I'm really thinking it's pancreatitis, but at this point who knows? Some posts scared me to death and others put me at ease.

Default update

So they did the ultrasound and there is definitely evidence of pancreatitis. The only thing concerning them is why his protein levels dropped so dramatically b/c his type of pancreatitis is not severe enough to cause that. It went from 3.6-1.1 in one day while he was on fluids and meds.

While doing the ultrasound they noticed a pocket of fluid on one side around his lung. They said this could be related to the protein loss, but it's concerning that it's only on one side. They are drawing out the fluid today to test it and hoping that it's clear b/c it could just be a weird case. Protein loss enteropathy can cause fluid to go to other parts of the body. On the other hand, more seriously, it could be hiding something like a tumor and be lymphoma or heart disease (since he was little, they always said his heart looked enlarged). Sometimes once they draw out the fluid, it could just relieve the problem and we'll never see it again. I'm praying this is the case.

He is staying again tonight and based on the results from the tests today we'll see when he's coming home.

They did say he is surprisingly happy for everything he's going through and his stomach is becoming less tense and distended.

I know my little guy is a fighter so I'm praying this will all be over soon.

I'm really worried about your little man now. Bless his heart, I sure hope they get him all fixed up. If it is pancreatitis do you know how he got it? Was he eating too much dairy products? Please keep us all updated on this baby.

They said that it could just be genetic or from us feeding him table food. The thing is, he only likes veggies and fruits. Occasionally, my husband will give him his scraps, but never meat. We always say how cute our little vegetarian is. It definitely is pancreatitis though. We just need to find out if the fluid is related to that or something else the we happened to find at this point.

Default another update

So I spoke with the doctor again and they did an echocardiogram and said his heart functions are normal so they can rule out heart disease. His protein levels have risen a bit so this is a good sign. They took a biopsy of the fluid from around his lung and we'll know the results tomorrow along with the urine analysis. The big scare is the fluid b/c that could still be something to worry about. They said the fluid was clear which is a good sign...if it was bloody or had pus they would be concerned.

Tomorrow, they're going to start offering him special food for pancreatitis and water so if he takes that with no vomiting or loose stool then I can bring him home!

I'll keep you all posted!
