| Please Help!! Bella ate toxic gum!!! Around 8pm bella got into my orbit gum. orbit has a toxin in it. i took her to th evet immediatly and called poison control. they induced vomitting and she threw up half the peice of gum she ate. a whole peice of gum was just on the edge of being very poisonous to her. the vet wanted to keep her overnight on an iv. they gave her stuff for vomitting and for nausia....and then just wanted her on and iv the rest of the night....(12 hours total) i decided to take her with me. i am staying up the entire nite with her and every 2 hours am feeding her nutrical for her blood sugar and making sure she drinks lots of water. any help/suggestions/prior experiance with this would be awesome!! please i am scared i made the wrong decision by taking her, but i just dont see what they would have done besides montier her blood sugar which i am doing. .......

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I don't think there is much else you can do. Thankfully they were able to flush it out of her. Just keep her hydrated and watch her over night.

| My dog went through this exact thing back in November after eating some Trident gum. I too chose to bring my baby home(mostly because I couldn't afford to keep him there) after they kept him at the clinic all afternoon monitoring him and his blood sugar. They sent me home with a syringe of a glucose medication/insulin and I had to give it to him all night. I also had to make him eat food every hour to help keep his blood sugar stable. I'm a diabetic so I have a monitor and was able to watch his blood sugar with that. The next morning I had to take him back to the clinic for them to check him and his blood sugar. It was a very long, scary weekend, but my baby made it through. If he didn't eat too much he has a very good chance that things will be fine. |

| Thank you both so much for replying!! you dont understand how much it means to have your support! they didnt actually flush her out....just force her to throw up (is that what you meant?) honestly....i am the first person to leave her at the vet and pay anything! i just paid 1500 in march bc she ate a flower that was poisonous. but i just didnt see what the vet could do that i couldnt, or that was worth it? it was just the iv. and they wanted 600. i still ended up paying 180, but thats better than 600. she seems fine, just a little uncomfortable, NOTHING like when she has toxic poisoning from the flower. i guess i just have to watch for low blood sugar signs! make sure she doesnt have a hypoglycemic attack. on monday i will take her to have a blood test to get her liver checked. i guess too much of this toxic substance can affect the liver...but the vet couldnt do anything to prevent that. ahhh sorry i am babbling on and on...i just love her so much and am scared.

| Prayers and hugs for you right now. This is the fourth story I've heard recently about orbit/or sugarfree gum. It's he Xylitol in it, right? Is that in anything else? My son just told me that he chews Orbit, but that he won't any more. This is scary stuff! Thanks to all of you for the warnings.

| Any sugarless gun, is toxic to dogs. It is the sugarless part that is a toxin for them. It doesn't matter what brand it is , just being sugarless does it. I had a sick dog that had chewed a gun wrapper. it had enough on it to make the dog sick. |

| My vet said it was important that he eat a little every hour. For example, a small can of wet food, divided into fours. If you can get him to eat 1/4 every hour that would be good. I thought it might be impossible, but my dog ate it. I had to stay up all night with him and wake him to take his meds, eat and take his blood sugar. You use the monitor just like you would on yourself. Get a sample anywhere you can get blood. Your vet was right. If it starts to affect their liver, kidneys, etc. there is nothing they can do. Doesn't sound like he ate too much and what he did they got up. Yes, it's the Xylitol in ANY sugar-free products not just gum- muffins, cookies etc.... |
