Default Prognosis for Kennel Cough??

My little Sadie, 14 weeks old, has Kennel Cough!! We took her for her shot last week, but she was so sensitive to the needles that she freaked out! The poor vet decided not to give her the stuff up her nose for Kennel Cough, because she was so stressed; said we'd get it at the next booster in one month. She did get the distemper/parvo shot.

Well ..... when we got home, we'd forgotten to ask how long after the shot could Sadie be around other dogs? The receptionist checked with "the dr" (there are 3 of them at this clinic), and said, "Right away", so that's what we did. We started taking her to public places, walking around the block where other dogs had been, etc (although she was in brief contact with only 2 dogs). About 4-5 days ago she started coughing and has become increasingly lethargic. She's still eating and drinking (although not as good as before), and doesn't have diarrhea, but we took her back to the vet today. The vet said she probably has Kennel Cough (she's treated 6 cases in our small town in the last few weeks already), and put her on Amoxicillian twice a day for 10 days.

As if I'm not stressed enough by this, we are supposed to be FLYING 3 hrs with her in one week - we've had our tickets and other arrangements made for months. The vet said she'd probably be OK by then, but I've been reading lots of horror stories about Kennel Cough that wouldn't go away, multiple courses of different kinds of antibiotics, and things like the fact that they can spread the bacteria up to 14 weeks later!!!

Can anyone give me their experience with this? Has anyone had GOOD recovery?! How long did it take until your dog was feeling better? Did you keep them away from other dogs for 14 weeks?!? Help!!

Thanks, (and sorry this is so long! Please excuse me: I'm a "new mom"!)

first off. WELCOME!!!! you are going to love Yorkie Talk!

Ah Kennel cough.... Layla had the shot and still got it... so Sadie could have had it that day and still gotten it.. it's like the flu... even if you get the shot.. you can still get the flu

SHe should be put on antibiotics to keep this from becoming pneumonia.. otherwise little can be done for Kennel cough.. it's like having a cold.. it needs to run its course... if she is coughing a lot you can probably ask him for a cough suppressant. Layla did have one... all her coughing was at night.. i set up a warm air humidifier by her crate at night and that helped A LOT!!! Layla's lasted a little over a month. But get the meds to be on the safe side with the pneumonia.. especially with her being so young.

Default Thanks!

Well, now I feel a bit better knowing that she could have gotten it even with the shot. The breeder had been reading about the dangers of vaccines, and Sadie only had her one distemper shot when we got her at 12 weeks.

I still feel bad about taking her out and putting her at risk when she's so little! But she does seem to be livelier this evening already (she IS on antibiotic, thanks!). Hopefully she won't take too long to recover!

Thanks for the info & advice!

Hi there, my baby bella had the same thing not too long ago, and I got so mad because the vet was never clear about her condition, told me to give her the medicine, then she got worse I had to take her to the Aminal Clinic at 2 in the morning...... I didn't know what to do. So went to the vet one more time and they did x rays on her but still couldn't see anything wrong with her.... They said it could be kennel cough or something that yorkies have as a genetic thing, wich is when their breathing pipe closes for a couple of seconds and the cough....... The vet recommended to give her the cough medicine once daily if she starts to cough, specially nightime, then I asked her for how long? No answer.........

So I went and checked a lot of websites that have natural remedies for dogs and I found a lots of things that you can try and it wont harm your dog..... If you're up for it.... I went to the natural food or vitamin store and got DROSERA...... they sale in little tiny balls and you give it to your dog 3 times a day or less if the cough is not that severe...... I can tell you bella's cough has been reduced to 10% of what she used to be...... I hope it helps your baby too...... If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.....

Good luck!

When I got Cali she had it and gave it to my then 8 year old pom. It took 3 months for them to get over it. They were on antibiotics to prevent pneumonia etc. They gradually got better, mostly coughing at night and when they first woke up. Putting them in the steamy bathroom helped. Hope your baby feels better soon.

Yep, we've got that nasty kennel cough in my house too. Lily's had it for right at a month now, and we're still working on getting rid of it. NO FUN.

Hang in there. From what I've read, it just takes a while to clear up and in babies (like mine and yours both!!) I think it might even be a little longer. We're on round 2 of antibiotics now. Yuck! I've also done the humidifier as well.
