Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | clostridium can someone PLEASE explain all you know about this and the most likely causes??? This is the second time Diggy has had it since March! I have to be honest too....I did not wash his hide a squirrel after the last bout of it. I completely forgot then it was out of site out of mind. No diet changes either. How long did it take til your baby felt better when they had it?? We had him at the vet this morning he got antibiotics and he also got a shot of fluids to keep him hydrated. Also what are the odds Bella has this. I talked with SimonandHallie and we decided Bella should get a dose of antibiotics too being she eats from the same bowl...IM SO STRESSED!!!!!!

| Acidophilus May I suggest using this as it may help build up his good bacteria. Ally gets it every day in her food due to her medical problems and it has helped. I know this is not answering the "why" he's getting this but it could off set it from happening the next time. When ever any of my pups are on antibiotic they get this also. Hope the Dig Man feels better soon! Acidophilus is a powdered form of a bacteria called 'lactobacillus.' It is used when the intestines have been compromised by illness, stress, or the use of medications like antibiotics. In these situations, the normal 'friendly' bacteria which help in digestion often die and are replaced by bacteria which tend to cause problems such as increased intestinal gas and diarrhea. The lactobacillus bacteria are used to help prevent overgrowth of these undesirable bacteria, and allow the 'friendly' bacteria to recover their normal numbers.

| You can get it in the health food store. I use Florastor, it's for kids. Any childrens is fine. Always keep it in the fridge and yes, you can use it every day if he has had problems in the past. It won't hurt him but will build up his GI tract. Plain yogurt is fine too but try to get them to eat it when it's plain....NOT. A pinch on the food every AM does the trick. I'm not sure what to tell you on prevention. It sounds like your doing everything you can already. Good luck! Quote:

| If I remember my microbiology, clostridium forms spores (like a protective shell) until the environmental conditions are optimal for its survival. So even though you may have treated diggy before the spores could have been hanging around ANYWhere. If consumed again and it hits the perfect living environment (diggys warm tummy) and it sheds its spore, makes toxins that makes you sick...Granted, my micro class was many moons ago. I see the human form (clostridium difficele) in the hosptial sometimes when the patient has had a long course of antibiotics..strong ones. The antibiotics kill the good bacteria that keeps you healthy. So some of the bad ones take over like yeast or clostridium. I take 50 million probiotics everyday to keep my gut heathy. I had a month of antibiotic when i had pneumonia in feb 08. i was feeling so run down. I had muscle weakness and clouded thinking. I felt "yeasty" my skin itched. So i did a major yeast clease and increased my probiotics from 8 to 50 mill a day. I was back to my norm in 36 hrs. I believe your gut is the basis of all health issues. Ok sorry to get off topic. I hope my lil buddy gets to feeling better soon. Between this and the hives...geesh! Take care Lisa |
