| Vomited black stuff I know this is gross, but it happened. This morning Pookie was outside for his normal go potty. He came in to eat and just vomited black yukky stuff. All I can think of is that he ate dirt. Our backyard is very clean, fenced in, but he digs a hole every now and then in the grass. What would make him eat dirt? I'm assuming it was dirt, there's nothing out there he can get into. I don't know how to get him to stop eating everything he sees. You guys think he's ok? He's acting normal now.

| It could be dirt but it could also be dried blood. I would call the vet just to be safe.

| You guys are scaring me. He is eating ok, running, playing. The color wasn't that deep dark dark red, it was black as dirt. I'll take him in just in case it wasn't dirt.

| Digested blood will be black. It could be dirt, keep an eye on the poops, if they are black i'd take your baby to the vet to be careful. Also keep an eye if he vomits again, what color, how often ect.

| I agree with everyone else. It could just be dirt (&probably is) but better safe than sorry! I would just call the vet&ask just in case. Good luck!

| I hope it isn't anything serious and doesn't happen again. If/when you do find out what the black stuff was, let us know..

| I did call my vet, and explained the consistency and texture and he told me that unless he does it again, he's ok. That if he was expelling dried blood it would be in his feces and he would do it for awhile, more than likely it was dirt. Thank you all for your concern. I appreciate it.

| well, in humans if you throw up blood and it looks like coffee grounds (dark and grainy looking) that is a sign of a lower GI bleed. did it look like dirt, or coffee grounds? if he does it again i would get him to the vet asap, as he might have a bleed.
