Default Bailey still has a UTI

I had to take Bailey back to the vets this morning & she still has a UTI.
It has been about 4 weeks since her last check up.
The vet gave us a new med to try : Dasuquin
I am supposed to give her a 1/2 tablet once a day for two weeks then just once or twice a week there after.

She wanted to do a scope into Bailey's bladder today but I said I wanted to wait until next time if needed. Has anyone else had this procedure done?

Also my vet's office visit went up from $32.00 to $47.00. Today's visit was $156.00 (including meds) ouch....

Has her liver ever been checked?
Liver shunts can cause bladder problems (frequent UTIs and certain stones).

Yes she has. In fact the vet pulled all her records this morning & we talked about her liver. All blood work came back fine.

I also had changed their food from Nature's Variety to Natural Balance because their vet said the ash content in their blood panels was too high for them. Looked really well this morning.

If Bailey still has blood in her urine and grainular crystals next visit we will have to let her put the scope in her bladder to look around. Sounds painful..

Ellie had a UTI that wouldn't go away (no bacteria could be found after awhile but the urination problems continued...). She had an ultrasound, not a scope. That sounds reeeeally painful.

I think so too, that's why I said next visit if neccesary.

Bailey is peeing frequently & a lot. Thank goodness I have tile & wood floors! Sunday night while playing ball with my hubby she just squatted right in front of all of us on the floor and was ready to play again. That was not something she does ever!
She is also having problems jumping up on the couch, the vet said it was because her bladder is sore & she doesn't want to stretch it much.
I hope these meds work better!

Default bile acid test to be on the safe side.

My dog had UTI. It turned into stones. Turns out...bottom line is that he has liver shunts. No other symtoms...none...
He gets frequent UTI's now but that is because he still has not completely healed from the bladder stone surgery or UTI and stones themselves.

I will have her retest for that next visit. Bailey just turned 3 a few weeks ago. That is about the time it would show up correct? if it hadn't shown up earlier?

I'm not a vet, but from what I was told it typically shows up in males 1 1/2 years old (exactly when my dog's showed up) and females 3 years old. However, my vets (and I went to many) said that they have had older dogs come in with it. Every dog is different and I guess where the shunts are and how the liver is working plays a part in it. One vet said that many of the non-symptom dogs have more than one small external shunt (can't be corrected). That was what he experienced in his practice but I don't know if that is the general belief among vets.
Cornell has dogs come in of all ages with and without symptoms that have shunts.

Make sure to ask specifically for a Bile Acid Test if you're going to be checking her liver because a problem will not necessarily show up on the regular bloodwork unless it's advanced quite a bit.
