Ongoing eye problems..Please help I purchased Baby in early March. She had a well check the next day and she was perfect. By the next day her left eye became squinty. The following day she could not open it. I used a clean wash cloth to clean it up so I could see what was going on. It was blood shot, the lid was bright red, and there was a large amount of gunk in it. I had her to my vet of 15 years later that morning and he gave her eye drops, ear drops, and a shot of coenzyme Q-10 for a booster. She was at 2lbs 5ounce. It cleared up in two day. As soon as the meds were gone, we were right back where we started. This time I rushed her to the er. A different vet gave her two shots, and stronger eyedrops. Again cleared up in two day. As soon as the meds were gone, we were again back to the beginning. This time I was informed she had some damage to her left eye. He gave her more drops, and this time an orral antibiotic thinking it was a severe bacterial infection. Well here I am today, her meds ran out two days ago, and she is again squinting. I am extreamly worried about her. I don't want her to have to go through life blind in one eye. If any body has ever heard of any of these symptoms before please send me a message, either here or on my page. I am five hundred dollars into this, but have had no results. When I go to the vets tomorrow I would like to have a little info from others to help. Thank you for your time Dawn Marie

Pet health library I found a great site, It actually has a picture of what her eye looks like when at it's worst. I will be asking the vet to do a moister test tomorow. It looks like it could be KCS.

eye There may be a problem with the tear duct not producing tears...have it checked. Surgery is an option if that is the problem...

Thank you all for your information. I did more digging into KCS then called the vet this morning. She doesn't seem as bad today, and if we are doing the moisture test, he'd prefer waiting until tomorrow. That way the meds and drops are completley out of her system. Here's hoping for the best. Does anyone have any idea about the recovery time for this surgery? or for that matter the cost? I don't want to be shell shocked when I go in tomorrow. Thank you again, Dawn Marie

| My Emily Kate has dry eye in both eyes although the right one is worse than the left. She has had it ever since we picked her up from the breeder.. Her eye was shut but the breeder said she must have gotten her eye scratched by one of her littermates while playing. We started our trips to the vet. I actually changed vets with her for another opinion. Everytime we go in she gets her eyes tested for moisture. We did this for about a year. I had drops that go in her eyes 3x a day. It is a compound that has to be mixed by a drugstore that mixes compounds. Every visit for Emmy to the vet is between $l50 and $200 by the time they do the tests and get more medicine if needed. Finally, the vet mentioned surgery. She does not recommend it at this point. They take a gland (saliva gland) from their mouth and put it in their eye. She said that they will just see food or smell food and will start crying. She said Emmy should be fine for at least l0 years before she might have a problem with going blind. Hopefully, by then there will be better treatments for dry eye. Her eyes are not improving according to the vet but we have seen an improvement in the "eye boogers" that are in there each morning. Some mornings she wakes up and her eyes are clear and able to be opened. Money is not a problem if my baby needs something. I would morgage the house to be able to provide what she needs. Right now we are doing the best we can for her. Hopefully, a better answer will come along soon. My vet is very encouraged that something will come available. Our drops that go into her eyes are around $50 a month.

Lady had KCS (dry eye) in one eye. It is a result of her diabetes/nerve damage. She sees an opthamoligist. My regular vet tried cyclosporin (Restasis for humans), but it didn't do much good. We have had much better results with the newer FK5061. It's also important to use artificial tears 4-6 times a day to prevent eye ulcers and eventual blindness. You can get Lubriderm from your vet, but I prefer Genteal Severe Eye Gel. (It has to be the gel, not the drops because they last longer). My opthamoligist also gave me a great gel for cleaning the debris that collects around the eye area and causes irritation. It's called Blephagel and is wonderful! Lady is not a candidate for the surgery because of her age, but I would certainly consider it for a puppy. It is a very long surgery, several hours, and very expensive, though.
