| Mitral Valve Prolaps This question isn't about a yorkie, but about a cute little chihuahua puppy that a friend from work is interested in. He found an ad for a special needs chihuahua puppy and from looking at his pictures everyone in the office fell in love with him. This little guy has a heart murmur and his current vet thinks he may have MVP. The owners are selling him for just $75 with hopes that whoever buys him will put their money towards a proper diagnosis and possible surgery to correct it. From what I've looked at online, many dogs can live normal lives with this problem, but most of the stories I read were about bigger dogs. I thought I'd bring the question to the vast knowledge base that is YT and see if anyone here has any experience with MVP in small dogs! I'm hoping I can get some information as soon as possible, because a couple days ago he was sold, but then the new owners backed out and the current owner got in touch with my friend again asking if he's still interested, and that he could get him next weekend if he is.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | The murmur is the result of the mitral valve prolapse. It's become severe enough to be audible. It's a degenerative disease and would probably result congestive heart failure. He would require a cardiologist to treat his condition and they do not come cheap. An initial work up can run anywhere from $500-$750 at least here in Virginia. As much as one wants to "rescue" an animal I would not knowingly purchase a sick puppy...especially one as sick as this one seems to be. To be honest, I think it's unconsciousable that anyone would charge for this puppy. I would advise your friend to keep looking...

| Thank you! I read your reply to him and he said that's very true, and he's not going to reply to the owner for now. I'm just going to wait and see if I get any more replies to this thread...

| You may want to recommend to the original owners to give this furbaby to a reputable rescue organization. There, they can provide the dog with his medical needs.

| Thank you. Rescue organizations around here are pretty rare... There is one dog rescue that I know of but they are in desperate need of foster homes and donations. My friend was completely willing to pay for the medical expenses (which his owner said would be around $2000). I guess the question is really, what are the chances of this puppy living a long healthy life after surgery, or even getting through surgery if it is needed? He doesn't want to bring home a puppy to save it and get attached and then have his condition be something that can't be fixed.

Older dogs can develop MVP due to age which are treated by medications and diet. Those do not involve murmurs. Because of this puppy's age..his will be considered congential. The murmur is there because of the prolapse...that side of his heart is not functioning properly. His heart is working too hard. Eventually the valves can't force all the blood in the heart into the other chamber and the heart enlarges. Once the heart enlarges...it presses on other organs...making it difficult for the puppy to breathe. The younger the mvp and murmur are diagnosed the shorter the life expentency. My friend's american bulldog puppy had this condition. She spent the last weekend of his life holding him upright...so he could breath. He couldn't breath when he laid down and was exhausted from not sleeping. She had to put him to sleep...heartbreaking but the most loving decision too.

| Thank you very much. I think that just made his decision. I read it to him and he said "Yeah, I couldn't go through that."

I know he feels bad for this puppy...and wants to help it. It is sad...but really I think he should look for a healthy puppy. My friend's puppy....never acted puppy like...running and playing. He was just tired all the time. That is the symptom that made her take him to the vet. He just didn't act like a puppy.
