| Gigi and I need some advise Gigi is an eight month old yorkie and today she started vommiting three times to be exact. When I picked her up the breeder used Science diet but I bought Royal Canine instead. Gigi gobbled it up the first day (2 weeks ago) and then would not eat the next day at all. Consequently I exchanged the food for the science diet puppy. She ate it but not very much (maybe 30kibbles). She is five pounds. A few days later I bought the canned puppy science diet and Gigi ate the whole can. She was such a good eater that I have been mixing equal parts of dry and canned food for her each morning. Since then she has slowly lost interest in eating. I don't give treats except the training bits after a successful potty trip. We also have a strict rule not to give her any of our food since I want her to be as healthy as possible. She has been drinking water but I'm not sure what to do now? Please advise. | Was wondering if she is having a reaction to the changing of foods? When I changed my furbabies over to Canidae it took me about three weeks to get it done slowly so it wouldn't upset their digestive tract. Here's a site that you can find what are the recommended dog foods. Pet Food information, manufacturers, products, ingredients, cat, dog, pet food. Good luck. Hope someone comes on who is more experienced than I am.

| It seems yorkies have sensitive systems and in general it is a good idea to slowly change their food over. I would think that the reaction would be more diarrhea, however, not sure about throwing up. Has your yorkie been taken to the vet? Been given any blood tests? There can be many reasons for your dog to be vomitting and perhaps you should see your vet. I hope she feels better.

| Thank you for a fast response To answer your question, no I have not taken Gigi to the Vet yet. I have Chosen a vet in my area but that just lead me to the next question. What do you all think about pet insurance? More specifically, petinsurnce.com? does anyone use them? If so how does it measure up. Afordability is key for me as I am disbled and on a fixed income therefor, it woul be much eaiser to make a mothly payment. |

| I am also wondering what the vomit looks like? Is it "normal" vomit; or frothy and yellow or ? Is your yorkie acting normal otherwise? Does she have energy and is playful? I have 3 yorkies, I don't personally have the pet insurance as they exclude so many things and I work with medical insurance everday and I see what a racket it is. Maybe others have experience with it and can help you. A lot of people recommend putting a cetain dollar amount aside a month and saving up for any emergencys.

| Thanks Mojo So again thank you for your advice. Gigi's vomit was yellow and slightly frothy. What does that indicate? She is playful but tires out quicker than usual (although how much is usual as I've only had her for two weeks). I was able to get her to eat a small amount of boiled chicken breast w/o the skin. She also drank a little water. Last edited by gigis_mom; 04-18-2008 at 09:55 PM. |

| When I got my boy several years ago, he was vomiting yellow (bile) and it was frothy. He also slept a lot, wouldnt eat and had no energy. Turned out he had coccidia. I hope you can get more input from other yters tomorrow. My personal advice is if you are able to afford it, take your pup to the vet. I really hope your yorkie starts getting better! Sorry to hear she isnt feeling well, that is the worst.

| Absolutely! take her as soon as you can!! Gizmo is 3.8 yrs old and never had any problems with him, until I changed his food... unaware of the measures that need to be taken to avoid any problems... I drastically changed his food to the Eukanuba Yorkshire Breed Specific food & 3 wks later was vomiting with specs of blood... He'd developed an intestinal infection, due to the change... I felt so ignorant and at the time had no YT support... If its not that Gizmo is a beautiful healthy big boy(11 lbs.), we would've lost him... He's now back to normal, he was treated with r/d prescription Hills Diet. Hope Gigi gets well soon! |

| doing better? Well it seems like the boiled chicken did the trick? So far she has kept it down all night. I hope she will eat her dry kibble today? Any other suggestions? Should I just give her more chicken for today? |

| Yes, if she is eating the chicken and keeping it down, you can feed her more. You can also give her a little plain white rice. You definately need to make sure she is eating to keep her blood sugar up. I would also make sure to have some nutrastat on hand for her. Make sure she isn't lethargic, that is a definate sign to take her to the vet. Glad to hear she's doing a little better.

| update on Gigi So what is nutrastat? Sorry, but I am new to yorkies and my Rotty never got sick. I just fed her some more chicken and a carrot as well. I will take your advice and give her some rice later on today. I am basically going for the ingredients listed in dog food. I currently have Science Diet Puppy, both canned and kibble that she wont touch anymore. Do you think she just needs a fresh food diet, or will I be able to change her back to regular dry food? |

| If I see yellow vomit, I would treat for low blood sugar 1st, especially if she is quieter than usual. I use Nutri-Cal for raising the sugar level, available at your Vet. If it goes low, before you get some, a teaspoon of Karo syrup will help. When you register you pup with AKC, they send a certificate for a free Vet check, I think.. I don't know if you have to actually get the insurance or not. I don't use insurance, and I haven't paid much attention to the paperwork about insurance. But some of my puppy buyers have mentioned the free Vet check. There are many reasons for bile vomit.. so as much as it hurts, she needs a Vet check. Losing interest in food previously liked is a red flag to me. She needs blood work. Does she have diarhea? A stool check for worms, and cocci would be wise too. Maybe you could find a Vet that accepts monthly payments. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Yorkies are high maintenance, and you "ain't seen nothing yet"... Good luck, and let us know how she does at the Vet. |

| nutristat or nutrical is a high caloie food supplement. It comes in a tube you can buy at a pet food store or I have even seen it in walmart in the pet aisle. You put about an inch on your finger and give it to your pup. I think we are all in agreement your dog NEEDS to go to a vet. Many things could be going on with her and you dont want to risk losing her. Yorkies can also be very picky about food, however, I dont think that is what is going on here and yes, you can change your dog back to regular food once she is well. I love the suggestion about the akc. Check it out. I just recently got a puppy, registered her w/ the akc and you do get a free vet check if you take the free trial insurance.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Technically, your baby is an adult at 8 mths - but since you *just* got her from the breeder and she was in recent contact with puppies - you really should get her to the vet. It's best anyways to get any new dog to your vet asap - just to get them checked over. I would not recommend giving carrot at all, at this time. Since you're already giving rice and chicken (and IF she's keeping it down), then stick with that combination only - until you see the vet. Personally, I'm not a fan of Science Diet or Royal Canin - but everyone has to find what works for them. If RC is your goal, then you'd want to add it back in once you get a health 'okay' from the vet. If it were me, and if I was going to feed kibble (I feed Natures Variety Raw Frozen or I home cook for my dudes) - I'd feed Natures Variety Instinct Kibble, Canidae, Orijen, Natural Balance, California Natural - or something like that. Plus, if I had to feed kibble - I'd add in canned food for the superior meat quality and added moisture. Please update if you can!

| The latest on Gigi Well in the early afternoon she had some diareah so I gave her half a teaspoon of pepto. Then about 4:00 I gave her some more chicken, rice and carrot. She really went for it. She has had two more loose stools but is keeping the food down today. And of course she is drinking water. However she isn't quite as playful as normal. My vet will be in on Monday and I will be calling to get her in right away. Thank you all so much for being there for Gigi and I. Tonya-Antioch, CA |
