| Cooper has stones and crystals in his bladder! I came home from work the other night to find that my yorkie, cooper, had thrown up about 8 times. The next morning I took him out to go to the bathroom and he couldn't pee. He was pushing and nothing was coming out. When i picked him up, there was blood all over his penis. So I took him to the vet and they said it was good that I took him when i did or else his bladder would have burst. It was full with urine because there were stones blocking his urinary tract. I had to buy him special food (royal canin urinary SO) to try to dissolve the crystals and break down the stones so that he could pass them. They wanted him to go to the emergency clinic to stay the night because they put a catheter in him to drain his bladder. So I picked him up the next day and took him to the vet so they could watch him, but i got to take him home that night. He was extremely restless, still having trouble urinating, and barking very loudly. I ended up staying awake with him to calm him down until he fell asleep. Finally he did and I got a little sleep and then I heard him making painful noises (he sounded like a goat!) so i went in there and he was trying really hard to urinate, but couldn't. I had to take him to the emergency clinic AGAIN so they could drain his bladder. Then I had to take him back to the vet and they let me know that he needed surgery to remove the stones. The grand total so far is $2300. I am a college student, so all of this is very hard to pay for. My sister let me borrow some money and so did my aunt, but i have to pay them back. IT is the hardest thing I have ever had to go through, financially and emotionally. I love my little Cooper to death and will do whatever I can to help him...I just got a call from the vet saying the surgery went well, so that's a relief Just keep him in your prayers please because it can be a recurring problem!! |

| Prayers for Cooper!!! My baby Nygee went throught the exact thing 3 yrs ago, but her vet did a cystotomy at once, she didn't wait for her to suffer over and over, by draining her bladder, she just got to the point... Then she was put on u/d prescription diet by Hills... Nygee's stones were calcium oxalate, which could only be removed surgically... Let me tell you something that I didn't know, after surgery, make sure Cooper gets bloodwork and urinalysis every 3-6 months, to determine if he needs other supplemets, because I had no clue, and my vet didn't care to advise me either... I educated myself through the other YT moms, but for my baby Nygee is too late, she's formed bladder stones for a second time, and kidney stones as well... I will provide a website that will explain the process in detail... Cooper will be perfect once again, within days he'll be himself again... Oh, what they charged you, had to do with the E/R visit, I'm sure, and you had two... Some vets are in it for the profit, I wish they were in it for the passion!!! Praying for Cooper to recover promptly!!! |

| Cooper had three different types of stones. He had struvite, oxalate, and monohydrate crystals. He actually passed two of them but the third was just too big to pass. The only reason the vet wanted to wait was because if we could have done it without the surgery, it would have been cheaper and i have limited funds..but now since we waited, the price was doubled because of the emergency visits! Thanks for all the helpful info! I hope cooper recovers well, and this summer I am getting a job to pay everyone back and put money in savings in case something like this happens again! |

| regarding struvite stones: I was in search for natural/holistic care alternative and was searching for information on cranberry extract, which I was sure was going to promote good bladder health... One of the YT moms advised me of Solid Gold Berry Balance, sold in powder form she gives her pup... This extract helps dissolve struvite crystals and promotes good bladder health... This might be something worth looking into... go to calibex.com, thats where I found this supplement for pets... |

| Struvite stones are capable of dissolving but calcium oxalate stones have to be removed surgically because they don't typically dissolve. I'm so sorry to hear about your furbaby...It's important that you add equal parts water to each of your furbaby's meals. For example, if you feed 1/4 cup of food at each meal, make sure to add 1/4 cup of water to that food at each meal. You need to keep the urine as dilute as possible in order to prevent crystals and stones from forming. This is done by feeding a high moisture diet. Just drinking high amounts of water is not enough. Extra water should be added to the food. Also, I do *not* recommend adding salty things to the water to encourage drinking because this can cause it's own problems.

| thanks so much to everyone for the advice and support! Cooper got his surgery and is doing great. He has a pretty big cut on his belly, but the stones are all gone! I am feeding him 1/2 cup a day of his perscription food and mixing it with 1/2 cup of water. He is drinking a lot and eating all of his food! He i back to being himself now...but now he pees a LOT. It's like anytime he can pee even a little bit he will. I keep him in my bathroom when im gone, and i always come back and have to scrub the floors from all of his pee. What should I do to fix this? I feel bad punishing him because of all the pain he just went through and im not sure if he can help peeing this much...How do I potty train him again?? |

| I'm so glad that you add water to his food now!! That's such an important thing One of the biggest pieces of advice the vets gave to me is that dogs with crystal/stone problems need to have access to a place to pee at all times. We use puppy pads for Miko to pee on so that he never has to hold it in. Holding urine is harmful to them particularly when they have bladder problems. So, try not to discourage him from peeing, but get him to pee in the right place. I know, easier said than done. LOL
