Unhappy Diarrhea, yellow bile and now not able to poop ---- please post asap

Hi everyone. My little Lewis needs some help! Our vet is closed and I'm contemplating whether or not to take him to the emergency Vet...

Let me fill you in.

Lewis sleeps with us in bed. Well, I noticed him shivering about 4am. He never shivers except right out of the bath when he's wet and chilly. He was warm on me and on nice covers.... I shrugged it off, got out of bed to go to the bathroom. When I came back hubby was in the other bathroom starting a bath for Lewis because he'd had really bad (he said "explosive") diarrhea. It was mostly liquid, with a few clumps as well... sorry for being graphic. It was a bit greasy as well. We got him cleaned up... and the bed. yuck.

So, this morning about 8am I took him out to pee... he tried and tried and tried to poop, bless his heart... but nothing came out. Only a teeny tiny bit of yellow liquid bile. All day long, he's only peed once. He's acted fine. Doesn't seem any different. He is sleeping now, but this is how he normally is this time of day. Hubby just took him out to potty and he didn't pee.... he also tried and tried and tried to poop again...but nothing!

I'm getting worried...really regretting that I didn't take him to the vet this afternoon.

I limited his food today....he had maybe a 1/2 small handful. He eats Bil Jac.... I've watched his water bowl today and he has touched it only once.

What should I do? Please msg quickly.

You at least need to call the emergency clinic and see what they have to say. If they say go, you need to go. These little guys can get REALLY sick, REALLY quickly. If he has another bad night he could be one sick little guy tomorrow.

Good luck and keep us posted..

Is it possible he ate something and may have a blockage? I would take him in just to be safe. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm so sorry to hear he is having this problem. First off take him off of all food and let him just have water for a day to see how he does. Did you also know that even if you buy the same brand dog food all the time it doesn't mean it's exactly the same. Fact is, there is no way that dog food can be made exactly the same each and every time. Could be something different was added. Anyway, if he does ok for a day on water, then try him on some white rice and ground beef. Maybe you could switch him over to real food and avoid these types of problems.

Any update?

Could he have gotten into something? Any new treats? Dogs have very short digestive tracts, so when something irritates the system, it doesn't have a whole lot of time to "resolve" (like it may in us). It's not all that uncommon for him to continue to try to "push" either - for the same reasons, not to be too graphic, that humans still have that urge when having issues.

Whether or not to go the vet sort of depends on his hydration level, your comfort level, his age (puppies should usually go in ASAP!!), whether or not there was blood - and if the blood continues (a bit of blood is usually normal in canine diarrhea). So, there are a lot of things that go into the equation - in terms of - "is my dog at risk here?" - you know what I mean?

I would also just throw in here, as a kind offer - that I'd highly recommed a different food. Bil Jac is a really, really poor food (sorry to say) - and long term - could cause problems, not to mention that it could be the cause of this short term issue.

Sorry I am just now posting an update. I first posted Friday night. So, I called the emergency vet...who didn't tell me it was urgent I get him in. I then called our regular Vet's office....and learned that they were also open on Saturday's til noon, so I left a message for someone to call me first thing in the morning. We were at the vet's office by 9am! Lewis still hadn't pooped, poor thing. Turns out, all of the tests ran were negative. He had no obstruction...not impacted. All was fine. He had eaten 1/2 of a strawberry Thursday, before all of this happened.... he is just one of those with a very extremely sensitive stomach. He cannot have anything except his kibble and doggy treats. Poor thing.

Thank you all for your concern and replies. I was worried.... and very thankful that it wasn't anything serious.

xoxo to all, ang

PS, this morning he finally had a bm... never have I been so thrilled to see him poop, lol. =)
