Canine Influenza? Does anyone have any experience with this? Piper arrived Friday night by airplane. She started coughing as soon as I took her out of her kennel. Now she has this dry hacking cough (sounds like she is trying to bring up a furball). Her breeder said it is probably canine influenza brought on by the stress of the trip. She is going to the vet today. She doesn't seem to be in pain or anything and she's eating, drinking , peeing & pooping. Just looking for any kind of advice. TIA. Susan

Ive been dealing with this for 3 weeks now! UUGGGHHHHH I also have a Piper! When I brought my Piper home she started to cough and I have had at the vet everyday for nebulization treatments as well as antibiotics and b12 shots. now, my 1 y old Duncan has it too and they have both been vaccinated and gotten bordella boosters. My vet told me that there seems to be a doggie epidemic going on here in FL and tons of dogs are getting sick. Breaks my heart that they arent well but Im doing all I can right now for them. GL with your new wee one! Elizabeth Duncan and Piper

The breeder sent info on canine influenza and it is a lot like kennel cough but you don't treat it with antibiotics unless there is fever, etc.? I don't remember everything I read right now and don't have it at hand because I'm at work. Susan | |

Together with my vet, we decided to treat with antibiotics just to be on the safe side. I didnt want this to go into the lungs and cause pneumonia. So far its just stayed in the upper chest. TG Talk to your vet and see what he/she says. It can be a stubborn pain in the butt to get rid of. GL

I don't vaccinate mine for kennel cough but I do use a homeopathic remedy. Let us know what the vet says. I hope all goes well.

Back from the Vet Hi everyone, Piper did well at her first exam. The doctor felt the coughing was more likely to be from kennel cough (like BJH said ) or strain if she was barking a lot on the plane trip. She gave her some antibiotics and everything else seemed fine. Thanks for all of your input! Susan Piper, on the mend

I am glad it is nothing too serious. If it is kennel cough it will take her about 3 weeks to completely get over it. In the mean time be sure not to expose her to other dogs because it is very contagious.
