| Spay - Post op questions... maybe normal? Hi all - first post here; but it's Easter Sunday so my vet is closed and I'm a little nervous about what might be perfectly routine. Any feedback would be appreciated. My 5 1/2 month yorkie Kelley was spayed on Friday morning and we picked her up Friday afternoon. They didn't give us any indication that there was anything in particular to watch out for, just keep her quiet for a week or so. Late last night, I noticed that when I wiped up her pee-pee (she has accidents) it was a little off color - like a light brown on the paper towel. When I wiped it up this morning I paid much closer attention and noticed that the pee itself is perfectly normal color, but there are a few drops of blood around it. Further, I looked around and see trails of little blood droplets. I've checked her incision and it looks fine. It is barely red at all, isn't leaking, so that is not the source of the blood. And it also looks like her nipples are swollen. They are definitely bigger than they were pre-surgery. Could she *possibly* be in heat after this surgery? With my other Yorkie this surgery was very straight forward, and these are the only dogs I've ever had. Has anyone else had this happen post-op?? Many thanks in advance for your help. -Jeannine |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | it could just be because she just had abdominal surgery. it could also be that she was going into heat a few days before the spay and now its showing signs. Or she could have a UTI. she's probably on antibiotics right? this should help with the UTI and abdominal surgery situation. keep an eye on her. As long as the incision isn't bleeding and she's not peeing a lot of blood she should be fine until monday.

| Thanks. You've eased my mind. I was preparing for a trip to the emergency vet (where they probably have me on a list of crazy dog parents that take them in for everything)... She is only on Metacam for pain, no antibiotics. Do you generally get antibiotics after a spay? It is definitely not a lot of blood, a few drops when she pees. I noticed it when I looked for it, but probably wouldn't have otherwise. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | a IV cath would have nothing to do with blood in the urine. If she had a urinary cath, and i don't see why she should, then there might be some blood.

| Thanks all. I didn't notice any more blood last night or this morning, but called the vet and they had Kelley in to take a look just in case. They didn't see anything wrong (and my pup nicely had an accident right there in the exam room when the tech arrived), I've just got to watch for a few days and make sure it doesn't reoccur. -Jeannine |
