| FREE Poison Hotline There are several poison hotlines out there, but they all cost $35-$55 just to find out your pup is fine. On the United Yorkie Rescue website http://www.unitedyorkierescue.org/ , they list the following FREE hotline. I have not called it to confirm it's current, but I'm sure that UYR would not list it if it weren't. I apologize it this has been listed previously, but it's a good reminder nonetheless. POISON HOTLINE FOR PETS! - 5/24/2007 Kansas State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is offering a FREE 24 hours poison control hotline for pet owners and veterinarians. 1+785-532-5679 is the number and the service has been available since 1969. Dr Oehme, a vet and professor in toxicology and pathology oversees the hotline. Dr Oehme offers these suggestions: - Be patient. The person answering the phone may have to take a few minutes to consult the vet on duty. - Call as soon as possible. Immediate attention might save your animal. But waiting to see if there is a reaction could cost your animal their life. - Have any product labels available for answers. The vet might need to know milligrams and generic names. - Know your pet. Drooling could only mean he is thrilled to see you! - Know that the toxicologists are also taking calls from vets about other animals and other problems, including those problems with large animals.

| Oh wow! I'm printing this out and putting it up by our emergency vet number. I personally think this would be a good sticky. Thanks for posting this.

| Since our own terrifying experience with Gizmo and rat bait, I know how important this is! Please post this information somewhere easy to find for anyone in your house.

| I took Judy's advice and sent this to Admin. They've now added it into their Sick/Emergency Sticky so it's handy. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35792 I think Wylie's mom should add the HEIMLICH MANEUVER she posted. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93940

You know....a really great fundraiser for YT would be a first aid chart you can put on your wall with a lot of this info! I bought a little bulletin board and put it by the back door. I have the emergency vet number posted there along with our regular vet number. I also put this info there, and I keep adding stuff. I think I need a bigger bulletin board.

| Update I really hate to say this, but this number is no longer a 24 hour hotline. I worked at the K-State Vet Med Teaching Hospital for a little over a year before they decided to change this policy. You can still call Monday thru Friday 8-5 to speak with Dr. Ohme free of charge....However, afterhours, they only accept phone calls from other vets. You can still call this number to speak with a vet about any other issues you may have...you just won't be able to speak with a toxicologist.

| I really think this was one of the worst decisions they could of made. It was so frustrating to answer the phone and turn people away once they made this change.
