| I hope someone can help me, my 17 month old yorkie girl has rashes that started a few weeks ago. About 2 spot rashes were on her neck area and a few on back next to her tail. It doesn't seem to bother her (she's not excessively scratching the spots) but it just looks soo itchy!!! I took her to the vet and they gave her histamine tablets (2 tablets daily for 3 days) and liquid antibiotics. They think she may be allergic to the flea's sylvia but they inspected her and she has no fleas. She took her meds but they are still showing up, at times the rashes are redder than normal. Is there something that I can give her like a small dose of hydrocortisone creme or something? Are those safe for yorkies? |

| Marcel + Wylie = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm, they didn't want to do a skin scraping and grow it out in culture? Was that mentioned? What is she eating for food and treats? Have you changed her diet in the last six months? Also check between her toes, under her armpits, inspect her chest, all around her neck - look for anything funky there as well. She could be having food allergies. Has she been around any puppies lately (then I would consider mange as well)?

I have 3 yorkies total. Along with having her, I also have her parents and they all eat the same food and her parents does not have any of her symptoms. I went ahead and got benedryl creme and dabbed small amounts on her spots and will see if this will work out tomorrow. Thanks for all your suggestions, they are wonderful advices! | |

| Can you post a pic of it? I am curious. My little baby had a weird, red, rashy spot, looked awful, turned out to be a staph infection. I have to shampoo her once a week in a special shampoo for a month. I have done it twice now, looks so much better.

| We have a full blooded rottweiler that developed a rash sort of like that - or at least what I am imagining in my mind from your description. It started out as a few round spots where he lost hair. The first vet I took him too said it was allergies, and the treatment didn't work. So I took him to another vet, and they did a skin scrape and some bloodwork. It turns out he had demodectic (sp) mange - a hereditary mange that is gotten from the parents. However, the parents do not necessarily show the signs, nor do the others in the litter. The mites are present on all dogs, but if the immune system is compromised, the mites grow in numbers and begin to cause problems for the dog. She said it generally only occurs in pure bred dogs. Maybe you should ask for them to check on it?

| I managed to take a few pictures but it isn't very clear. It also looks like she has bald spots but she just has thin hair like her mom. My husband mentioned that it may be "sunburn". Squeekie (that's her name), loves to place her butt right next to the heater. These rashes never showed up in December or January when she started doing this, so I'm not really sure if its sunburn. So now I'm not turning on the heater in the mornings anymore, she's just wearing a very warm sweater. Last edited by wookie; 03-17-2008 at 03:44 PM. |

| I'm now fearing if it is Staph. I just read a recent article that it is infectious even to humans. But Squeekie's mom and dad doesn't have any of this. |

| wow, those pictures do look painful. Perhaps you need to get a second opinion & it might be worth your time to go to see a different vet - I wouldn't recommend that often, but it does seem odd. Is there a university vet program near you that might have seen all kinds of things?

| Have they looked that way the whole time? Were they ever pussy at all? Has the medication the vet gave you helped her at all? I dont think it's a burn because it is little dots. Emmy had a tiny little red bump that turned into a greenish pusspocket (ick/sorry) about the size of a dime. (This was on her belly), then it turned to little spots and started going down towards her peeps. I have shampoo'd her twice with her special shampoo, she has one tiny crusty spot, and now a tiny little pus spot, but otherwise nearly gone. I dont know if something bit her or ??? The vet said all dogs have staph on their skin, so this must have just been oportunistic. I highly agree with the last poster if your dog isnt getting any better, go see another vet!
