Default Question about my puppy's pooping habits

Hello, I'm new to this site and in need of expert help. I have a 7 wk Yorkie pup male that is having a lot of trouble with his bm. He was dewormed 4 days ago, eats great but doesn't seem to want to drink a lot of water. I been feeding him Nutro's Natural Choice Chicken Rice and Oatmeal formula. His poopy is very soft but he seems to drag his behind and sometimes it gets stuck in a ball and I have to bathe him just to clean him up and give him some relieve. His anal glads are very red. When I took him for his shot I asked the vet and he said to keep him hydrated but that it was normal. I have 3 other older yorkies and never had that problem before. HELP! I'm going crazy over this. It breaks my heart to hear him in pain. Can you help my baby???

Welcome to YorkieTalk

Red anal glands isn't normal I don't think.
They drag their butts for anal glands, tapeworms and if there is poop stuck to it.
Soft stools make me very nervous in a pup since they can dehydrate so quickly.
Are you syringing water?
Seven weeks is very young to bring a pup home.
Please keep a very close eye on him.
I don't want to say you should change food since he is already having GI upset and that could upset him more but there has been bad press about Nutro lately. Nutro Max has caused vomiting in several dogs for an unknown reason.

Is his food canned? When sadie was on canned food she didn't poop as much. I was told it was becasue canned food has a lot of water in it. So she peed a lot.

Is he in pain? Or just not going real often? Sadie was not going often but never seemed in Pain.

You baby is very young. I wouldn't mess around with it. If he seems in pain go to a different vet.

Another thing is i would be giving pedialyte to make sure that your baby doesn't get dehydrated. That is what the vet always tells me to give my babies if they have any type of loose stool. How much does your baby weigh?

I know he is sooo young, he seems to be getting along great with my other Yorkies, he is very playful and just a joy. The only problem is that he continues to have problems with his stools. He currently weighs 1 lb. I give him can food. I have never used Nutro for my other Yorkies but a friend recommend it, so I'm giving it a try. I try to make him drink some water with a syringe. A couple of days ago I saw a bit of blood in the paper but haven't seen any today. His little backside just looks puffy and irritated. What kind of Pedialyte do you suggest? I'm willing to try anything.

Yes, he is on can food. He seems to love it and has no problem eating it. I think the drinking might be the problem

Ellie eats homecooked food (about the consistency of canned) and except for lately, she rarely drinks. They don't drink much on canned and canned food will make the stool very soft for some dogs. I don't know what you could do about it though.

What about expressing the anal glands? Have you tried that?

I would suggest you post in the breeders section about what to be feeding this pup - bc he is SO young. Red, irritated anal glands is not normal at all - nor is repeated butt dragging; so, something is irritating his system. Perhaps his system isn't getting the right food yet? I really don't have the right advice for a 7-week old pup - but the breeders on YT do - so please reach out to them, they are wonderfully supportive.
