Default Question about Gracie

Today, I let Gracie have run of the house the first time since her bilateral LP surgery. Before surgery, she favored her right knee going downstairs, she would not put any weight on it. Today, she is doing the same thing. What do you think? Might she still be painful from surgery? Is this just a habit that she will eventually unlearn? Did the surgery not take? I have told myself not to worry until she has finished her month of rehab, as she has not been up and about much over the last month.

Sorry I don't have an answer but hopefully someone can offer advice. Praying for a full recovery for Gracie. How is she doing otherwise? Please keep us posted. My Roxie just had her LP surgery two days ago.

I'm just speaking from my medical knowledge(i'm a rn not a vet) but after any surgery where you have to immoblized for a long amount of time the tendons will shrink a little (should have seen me after my knee surgery). the therapy is to help restrech the tendons and ligaments that have shrunk up. Gracie is prob favoring that leg because the tendons and ligaments are still tight. Bet she does a complete 180 after therapy

She might just be favoring it because she thinks it might hurt. I've also read where if a dog has broken a leg and it has been in a cast, that they just get used to not using it, so you need to imobilize the good leg in order to get them to start using the injured leg again.

Sweet Gracie...I pray she will have a full recovery...I know we are 8 months from Abigaile's surgery for Legg Perthes..and she still favors her left hind leg...I was talking to my husband just this morning..asking him if he thought we did the right thing by having the surgery...~~sigh~~

Thanks all, that makes me feel better. She is doing great otherwise. Today, I let her have run of the house and play with Holly. You can see in her face how happy she is about this. A lady at the park today said she looked so much better today than two days ago, when she was so subdued. I do believe that confinement and inactivity was depressing her. Tomorrow I will start walking her a little bit at the park. That should really make her happy.

Total hip replacement surgery and a revision still causes me to favor the other leg since it feels stronger. Therapy will help her strengthen the muscles, and it takes times plus healing.

So glad she is feeling better and wanting to play. Warmly, Deborah

I was thinking about Gracie today and I thought I'd see how she was doing....I'm so glad for you all that she's getting around, I'm sure she'll show some improvement everyday and she'll be running like the wind by summer!
