| Hypoglycemia Questions & Concerns [F][F]Hi, I am NEW to the board as of today. I have 2 grown Yorkie's and 1 baby(almost 11 wks). Today we had an episode that scared me to death & i'm still not so sure. My tiny yorkie...1 pd. 4 oz...10 1/2 wks old had a problem today. She was fine all morning until around 10:30-11:00 and i started noticing her lying around alot and pouting/crying, well we had just shipped her only brother to KY today so i thought that she may have already been missing him. So, i picked her up to comfort her and when i automatically knew something was not right because she normally would not just let you sit & hold her on her back like a baby 1st of all and then the whining and i also noticed before that, that when she was standing she was really wobbly. When i was holding her, her head all of the sudden fell back like it was broke & her legs got stiff. I had another to do this before so i immediately gave her Karo Syrup along with Nutri-Cal that we give her everyday...2xs a day and rushed her to the vet. The vet said that her temp was a little low...97 and her glucose was 88(low), but we had just given her the Karo syrup so they assumed it was lower than that. So they kept her to observe for a few hrs. Now that I have picked her up she still does not act normal, and her head is still wobbly. Do you think she is ok? Or do you think it could be from all that has happened...that she is just really tired and maybe her head could be wobbly from the meds they gave her or does it take a little while for them to stabilize? I'm just very concerned because this is only my 2nd litter, the 1st my dam only had the 1...this happened with her and she died later that night but her sugar was like 32 when i got her to the vet. And then of course the day i decide to sale the other something as tragic as this would happen. I'm just very concerned for her & i would like to know any thoughts or advise that you may have. Also, she would not eat at the vets office but when i got her home she ate some soft food for me & some milk replacer along with some Nutri-Cal...she wouldn't even eat for them so thats a plus. Please help!!! |

| Another member posted this and said her vet recommended this highly, and I copied and saved it for my personal use, but I will post it for you. 1/2 cup half and half 1/2 cup baby rice cereal 1 jar meat baby food, anything but turkey 1 tsp. karo or pancake syrup Mix together and add a little water if it's too thick for the syringe. Give approximately 2-4 cc's every hour (depending on size), then when the pup is doing better, you can increase the amount and decrease the frequency. After a day or two of this, as long as they are eating this on their own, gradually add softened kibble or canned food and slowly decrease the baby mixture until they are eating the food. Should take a week or so to do the change, to avoid upsetting their tummy. She told me to keep checking her gums, that they should look like a humans, dark pink to red, and her ears should feel warm, not cold at all, . If I saw gray in her gums, I was to feed immediately and if no improvement in 1/2 hour, to get her to the vet again. And I was told also to keep her warm, so we took turns holding her against our bodies.

| A blood glucose of 88 is is the normal 70-120 range (Lady is a diabetic so I am obsessed with blood glucose ), but since you had just given her Karo syrup it probably was lower to start with. She shouldn't still be wobbly and out of it though as once their sugar goes up, they feel better right away. Is she eating well? Karo is a quick fix to raise blood sugar, but she'll crash again unless she has a meal as soon as possible afterwards. I'd repost your question in the Breeders section. I think you may get more help there. |

That was me, and this formula saved Luna's life. The Nutrical will actually contribute to the hypo problem, as it spikes their blood sugar and then of course it drops after. The best thing and what works is protein and some carbs, which this formula has, and it's puppy friendly. The lady that gave it to me had been breeding Yorkies for over 30 years and this is what she weans her pups on I hope your darling feels better If you feel something isn't right, don't hesitate to call the vet back. They may have to give her sub-cutaneous fluids to help her over the hump. Prayers going up for you and your baby!

| Welcome to YT. Sugar should bring them out of the attack almost instantly. Since she is still wobbly I would be concerned about liver shunt. Did the vet suggest a bile acid test? How old was she when you got her?

| Thanks for all of the help/concerns! I truly appreciate it. I will most def. try the formula that was given. They did do a liver shunt test on her or tested what they could in her blood to test for it.. and they said that everything appeared to be normal as far as her not having liver shunt. She seems to be fine now, i posted an hr or so after i had brought her home from the vet. Throughout the night i kept giving her Nutri-Cal, vitamin drops, & regular feedings. I seem to think that may have been most of her problem now....was her not eating good. Because I had 4 pups only 2 lived...the boy is much bigger than her & has many more teeth than she does...also a much better appetite. She seems as if she can't eat hard food well so i grind it in a blender and also give science diet soft puppy food. But she really has no interest like a dog that is hungry would, she just picks..but if i hand feed it to her she'll eat more....it's weird. I am also still giving her Esiblac once a day to ensure that she gets the proper nutrition. But i thought with her being almost 11 wks that she would not need the milk and i would also have no worries about hypoglycemia...i was wrong. I am soooooo happy she made it through the night...i was scared for my life. Is there anything else I should know about yorkie health? I have 2 grown Yorkie's already, have raised both...the male i did have a problem with him but it was an accident...my little boy dropped him. Also...i had 1 litter 2 yrs ago before this and she only had 1 pup...she did the same thing to me just worse...i thought she was dead, took her to the vet her sugar was 32...she died later that night. That was before i knew anything about Nurti-Cal, hypoglycemia or anything...i got my male after the 1st litter. It just seems as if you need to know alot about Yorkie health problems when breeding or your gonna have heartbreak. |

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | okay true if they are having a low blood sugar episode sugar will have them bounce right back BUT if she had a seizure which it sounds like she did....then it will take a day or so for her to regain her strength at that size. My Diggy was tiny and had hypo seizures as a baby. Its a struggle, and feeding every 2-3 hours is VERY important. He even had them with 2 hour feedings. I had him Bile acid tested to be safe also. It was all his blood sugar and those seizures REALLY drain them. Head thrown back, stiff legs, eyes dont close, they dont lose conscienceness, lose bowels and bladder control while seizing, very weak and wobbly after seizure. This is my experiance with them anyway I am sure every dog is different but maybe this will help you in some way.
