I just her from the surgeon. It was kinda funny because I had started to dial their number when the phone rang and that's who it was.

I was told that Lucy is a lot more comfortable today. She is able to lift her head and turn it a little bit with little discomfort. It hardly hurts to be picked up. She still can't stand up, however, as she doesn't seem to be able to feel her legs on the right side.

They do expect this to improve and she should eventually walk, but she will probably always be weaker on the right side of her body. There was quite a bit of damage to her spinal cord.

They feeding and watering her by hand. She is catheterized, but they are removing that today and hope that she can urinate on her own. If she can urinate on her own, she will have to be held in a position where she can do that several times a day. Otherwise, her urine will have to be expressed and they will show me how to do that. It sounds like if she continues to improve I will be able to bring her home tomorrow.

I asked about brain damage and there doesn't seem to be any; for which I am very thankful. She should continue to improve for 6 to 8 months and any function she doesn't have back by then will probably not come back.

That is great news to hear. She's a fighter.. Thats awesome.. Fighters don't give up and neither do their momma's. I'm glad you have the knowledge and the support from the other members here that have gone through this. You are a remarkable woman.. My prayers are still with you and Lucy...

What a little fighter Lucy is, bless her heart. Prayer's still coming for her
to continue to get stronger each day. Thank the good Lord there is no
brain damage. What a special little Yorkie she is. In time, I'm sure, she
will be just fine. With her spirit and will to get well she can't help
but succeed.

Woooww majic50! I just came across this thread, read it from beginning to end! ooh my gosh, I am so sorry for your sweet little Lucy, my heart ached for her as I read on, until I came to the page with the AWESOME words, she is ALIVE! Praise God!! YT prayers at work. I am sooo happy that your baby is coming around and I know she will show progress one day at a time. I admire the support here, what a lot of angels there are among us.
I will join the many praying for the both of you. On the days that something makes you sad, just remember the blanket of prayers around you & your baby. Will be praying for a full recovery. (((hugs))) with care & comfort. Annie

i stand corrected. I spoke with some people at work today and realized i had confused two different surgeries. The surgery that lucy had is very critical. There is a high mortality rate. I was also told that they ARE sent home with a neck brace because they are not suppose to move that much. Things need to heal. Too much motion can cause damage.

i told them about bleu's body cast and they said a couple places do that, but most just go with a full neck brace (like what people wear).

i'm glad Lucy is doing better today. Hopefully she will be able to urinate on her own, but she will need help standing to do it. Its easiest to hold her over a wee wee pad, or a sink (that's not used for dishes lol). good luck!

Janice,
I am so happy that Lucy is doing better today.. I am sadden by the weakness on her right side.. Babybear is very weak on his right side also.. this is why he crosses his front legs we believe.. But then again maybe not.. Well if Lucy has weakness. After her 8 weeks I will give you some pointers on how to help her get stronger..Just let me know when you are ready.. You know me by now.. I have done it all with Babybear.. I am here for you all the way hon.. Big hugs to you.. You have had a very rough week.. Sending prayers to Lucy to keep getting better and Babybear is sending you yorkie kisses because you are such a special mom..

The neck brace you are talking about, is that the padded one, made of foam like Val was talking about? I think they used to call them a cervical collar? I saw some of those at the medical supply, if that's what you mean. Of course those won't EVER fit Lucy's little neck, but I could make one similar to that using the instructions Val gave me.

i guess its kinda like that. i haven't actually seen one because we don't have them in my particular department. its got to be either like that or like the 'bite not' collar. maybe you can get a bite not and pad it to make it more comfortable?

I'm not familiar with that type of collar. Is it to keep the dog from biting? Do they even make them small enough for Lucy? Where would I get it? I'm probably bringing her home tomorrow.

I got one of these and I bought the smallest they had.. They are way to stiff for what you need.. I took it to the vets office the day i picked Babybear up from his surgery.. The vet said no to it because of how stiff they are.. JMO
