Default Double rabies shot - problems?

Bella is 4.5 months old, 3 lbs.

She had her rabies shot on Jan 28 as part of her health checkup, along with her other shots.

My husband took her to the vet for her final shots, and the vet (our vet, not the breeder's) hit her up AGAIN with another rabies shot. I am so ticked I can't think straight! I GAVE them her shot history when we first brought her in.

I keep hearing about shots that can cause problems down the road ... is this one of them?

She's not acting strangely, but I'm worried about long-term effects?

Any shot can cause long-term effects. The key is to try to give them as least as possible. There is nothing you can do about it now, so try not to worry. But yes, the rabies shot is terrible to put into any animals bodies even once, sadly.

Often the side effects of the shots do not surface until months later. Too many shots can compromise the dogs immune system and later lead to behavioral problems, skin problems and other health problems. I would get her on good doggy antioxidant to try and boost her immune system.

wow that's pretty close together. Hopefully it won't cause any problems long term. I'm sure she'll most likely be okay.

When Lacy was a puppy we had a similar incidence. She was vaccinated for rabies at 3.5months. I took her back in 6 months later just to be dewormed because she was getting into the litterbox. I wasn't paying attention to what they were doing and she was completely revaccinated again for EVERYTHING. So far no issues with her...she's 3 1/2. I'll most likely be doing titers from now on before I vaccinate her for anything

I went Vet shopping today - well, over the telephone, at least. There's one about 30 miles away that not only has all facilities on site, but understands titers and my wish to NOT adhere to the "recommended" schedules. To make life even more interesting, they have an open door policy: they will never take your baby anywhere you can't go, and that's up to and including the surgical suite (should you so desire to be in attendance, also). They invite new clients to come take a tour of the facility, no appointment necessary - just show up and see the "real" deal. One of the things I found intriguing is that they are all digital ... no paperwork at all. All entries are made immediately and directly to the chart so that anyone anywhere in the facility can bring up all the latest data instantaneously. Kewl, huh?

My hubby and I are going to go over on Sat AM to check it out.

That sound so great. My vet is a holistic vet and he does titer testing also. Did you happen to tell them what happened to your baby and did they have any suggestions? Let us know how everything goes.

Yes, I did. They said recommendations are that vets really shouldn't give rabies shots before the pup is 12 weeks old, that giving it earlier is ineffective because prior to 12 weeks (and more in some instances) the pup still has immunity as given to it by Mommy. So Bella getting it NOW - it was in the "effective" range. Before, it was not. So - whereas it's not a good thing that she got two so close together - they don't think there will be any adverse effects on her down the road.

I don't know if I "buy" that or not, but I understand that you can't "unring the bell", and what was done was done. All I can do is hope for the best.

Here is the link to the new vet I'm considering: www.pethealing.org Wha'cha think?

I know some state laws require giving the rabies at 4 months old but I would hope the vet works with me and my next Yorkie pup and waits til 6 months. It is better for tiny dogs.

I checked out their website and thought it was very nice. I liked the newsletter and especially the article on the dangers of toads. I never knew they were that dangerous to dogs. Another good reason to never let your dog outside unsupervised. Thanks for sharing and best of luck with your baby.

Another rabies or another DHPP?
How old was he when he got his rabies?

What was your vet's response when he/she realized they goofed big time?
