Secret To those who have experience with UTI's

My furbaby was diagnosed with a UTI on Wed. She was started on twice daily Clavamox and is to continue taking it for 14 days. This is her 3rd day of anitbiotics and she is still drinking and peeing a lot. Not as much as before she started the antibiotics, but still more than usual. Can anyone tell me how long before she should be back to normal?

I really don't know anything about that but will send up prayers for your little one.

I don't have experience with UTI in dogs, but I have had cats with UTIs. As I recall, things started to quiet down within 3-5 days. If no better after a week, I would call the vet and see if they want to try a different antibiotic as symptoms should be much better by then. When the meds are finished, insist on a repeat UA just to make sure the infection was gone. My cat's symptoms went away after 3-5 days on the antibiotic but at two weeks, he still had bacteria and had to be put on a different antibiotic.

Here is a link to a website with some good information on UTI.

Thanks for the support. The vet asked that I return with a urine sample in 14days just to make sure that the infection cleared up. I guess it takes a while for the antibiotic to "kick" in. Thanks again.

When Cali had one it took about 3 days to see an improvement. Her second urinalysis was done 10 days later and it was clear. Hope she feels better soon.

Did they check the urine for crystals? This is important...If they do find crystals make sure they found out what kind they are...

My yorkie Samie had a UTI a few months ago. Same thing, vet prescribed Clavomox and after 2 wks. we rechecked urine and she was all better.

Make sure to bring in fresh urine. Or have the vet do cystosis.

If you are bringing the urine make sure to ask for a sterilized container from the vet. The best way i found to collect the urine was using a ladle or large spoon. Holding the sterile container in one hand, and the spoon in the other. As soon as your dog squats down to pee, quickly place the ladle under her. Sterilize after each use with boiling water. Then place it in a new ziploc bag after each use. That way it is ready for the next time you need it. I would recommend getting the urine to the vet within 15-30 min no later. And refrig until you leave the house.

And yes, make sure it is checked for "crystals"

Thanks for the tips sadiesamie. I was able to get the last sample by turning her piddle pad over and having her pee on the plastic (that was interesting), but I lost a lot of it when I tried to get it into the container. How long before your little one started to feel better?

That is called a table top catch and is least effective. She could have walked on the pee pad before or after peeing which would introduce bacteria to the urine. So next time if you can't do a free catch sample (putting a measuring cup or something under her while she goes, so she can't step in it), I would ask the vet to take it (cystocentesis). Table top collection would be a last resort for me.

Anyway, yes I do have experience with UTIs. Unfortunately, it isn't a good one.
Ellie started peeing too much and in the wrong places, so the vet took a urine sample and diagnosed her with a UTI.
She went on Clavomox.
That didn't clear it up because she was still going in the wrong places on and off.
The vet couldn't get a sample to recheck, so she did an xray for stones which was clear. Ellie then went on a stronger antibiotic, Zenequin.
That didn't completely clear it up but by this time we know it probably isn't a UTI anymore. It may be a bladder problem.
Ellie has had urinalyses and urine cultures. She had an ultrasound of her bladder and was treated for vaginitis just in case.
She still pees on the couch occasionally and for a day or two every month she has to go extra. So not ever her specialis knows what is going on. It could be neurological or connected with high bile acids or a pancreas issues. She isn't in danger though. So yes, I have had experience with it and I am hoping that the same thing doesn't happen to you. If the antibiotic isn't working by 7-10 days (which I think it will), I would call the vet. They might be able to change it at that point.

The infection cleared when we went back in two wks for a recheck. But she showed no signs. I didn't even know she had it.

She was producing calcium oxalate cyrstals in her urine and when we took her in for a recheck for crystals, that was when we discovered uti. but yes- you have to be very careful with the urine so that it does not get contaminated any way. You may want to do cystosis for this recheck just to be sure nothing touches the urine. I was told that even once it passes through the bladder it could pick up bacteria.

Samie didn't feel anything when they went in and took the urine from her bladder doing it the cystosis way (spelling?).
