| We Went to the Vet... And I had them run every test imaginable... they checked for heartworm, liver, kidney etc.. and everything came back negative and ok EXCEPT the KIDNEY LEVELS... he has a 52... well they said it could be that he isnt drinking enough water, so they gave me a prescription for amoxicillin 250 mg/5ml 2x a day until all gone... I am soooo worried that his kindeys are failing .. anyone have a furbutt with kidney problems? |

| The reference range is about 7-27. So that is quite high. It can happen if the dog has eaten a high protein meal or is dehydrated. If neither are the case then there is a problem unless this high level is "normal" for that particular dog. You took your dog in because of pain, right? In that case, with a high BUN I would think they should have done a urinalysis. Then if something still isn't right they would go to an ultrasound.

| well they tried to get a urine sample but he wouldnt pee in the cup ... so.. they did the bloodwork . They had to give him a mild sedative to allow the vet to get a blood sample. Last night he had some boiled chicken, I don't, I gave him some Karo Syrup since I was out of nutrical and 2 bites of pumpkin in a can..... I bought some pedialyte rice water so I will give him some of that today... I didnt see him drink any type of water yesterday so I don't know how well he has been drinking since I am at work.... |

| Will he eat Steamed Veggies and Fruit? As they have LOTS of water in them. Also the pedialyte is good, can you syringe it into his mouth? |

| How old is your baby? Why did you bring him in? Acting weird? Vomitting? Etc? What kind of food do you feed him? 52 is "high" ... if you've read Mogli's story, I'll warn that it ends poorly. His BUN was over 130. Even at 110 he had good spirits. Right now you need good news and HOPE. We were told throughout the whole ordeal that they can live normal lives. You can feed them K/D prescription food, give sub-Q fluids to supplement intake, phosphorous binders. The important thing is to recheck the blood frequently (48 hours) and make sure the BUN isn't going UP more. Run test for lepto, urinalysis for bacteria, etc. Another thing ... 7-27 is a guideline. Some dogs can have a BUN of 160 and feel fine. Some feel very sick at 50. Every animal reacts different, so if your baby is FINE and normal at 57, that is OK. Please post more info soon! |

| Green Beans - you can even get them frozen and just warm up in the micro with a little water in the bowl. Green beans seem to have lots of water. Also, romane lettuce - the stalks Apples (not the skin) - mine love the golden delicious and fugi or gala Watermelon is good too. |

| I am really confused. Dehydration does not equal yelping when getting up. I wouldn't be satisfied with that answer. He may be dehydrated by I would think (I am no expert) that even if fluids make him feel better something is not right. That could be kidney pain. Why didn't they just take a sample from him (catheter)? Could you get a sample from him and take it in? I've never met your dog so I don't know how he is at the vet's office. Ellie is a wiggle worm and doesn't sit still for a minute. They take blood from her all the time with no sedative at all and they do it from her neck. They just hold her...

| well I will try to get a sample from him myself and have them take it and test it... Gizmo is 2yrs and 6months old.. and weighs 4.1 lbs.... what do you think the amoxicilian is for ? could the boiled chicken have made his BUN go that high? Or the pumkin from the can? |

| I think we're confusing urine and blood samples (or at least I am) ... You will need both to help paint a complete picture. There are certain things they look for in the urine. The amoxicillin is given to treat bacterial infection. They do this as a precaution, if it works ... problem solved ... if not, they can rule out a cause and continue testing. Has he been vomitting? What kind of food do you feed him? Does he seem naseaus or less active? |
