| help hello, i just adopted a sweet 3 year old yorkie to be friends with my 3 year old chihuahua. they are both fixed, dont worry. I was hoping since i am new too the yorkie world that you guys could help me. she only weighs about 2 1/2-3lbs total, very skinny, and very bony. she is active and happy, but a very finickie eater. she will not eat out of a bowl, i can only get her to eat if i hand feed her, then the next day she will not like the food i am giving her. anyone have any ideas of how to get her to eat or gain weight? vitamins? food? supplements? any info will help. thanks |

| I don't know a lot about this subject -- but perhaps get a tube of Nutrical (you can get it at the pet store) -- it's a supplement you can give her if she is not eating and dogs seem to love it. It's packed with calories and is often given to puppies when they are not eating properly. Also, see if she likes carrots or apples in her bowl, mixed with her regular food -- this could be a nice, healthy treat for her, added calories and encourage her to eat the other regular food in her bowl. (It worked for my finmicky pup!) Good Luck!

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | She will probably fatten up a bit once she is settled in. My lulu eats all the time and it's a good quality food but she stays thin. So it might just be genetic for yours.

| Try adding a little water and warming up the food ... assuming it's dry food we're talking about. It sounds like maybe she is having some separation anxiety. |

| We have a one year old Yorkie girl who has been picky since the day we got her. As a puppy we found ourselves making little ground veal/lamb patties for her since she wouldn't eat regular dog food and would get nauseated and start vomiting when her stomach was empty. She will now eat her canned food, which is Wellness in the green can. Believe me, she's a fussy eater, and would not eat the same food two days in a row before, but she's been on this canned food for months and loves it. It's made with lamb and fish and some yams and bits of other veggies. It contains no fillers, no grains (she's allergic to beef and grains) and is all real food. She eats it if she's really hungry (when she's not, if we can get one piece down by hand, then she'll go back and eat the entire plate), but she's not chubby by any means. She's average weight and pretty healthy besides an occasional tummy upset. Oh, and btw, we found that if she isn't going poo regularly, she won't eat. Apparently when her intestines are full, then she won't take any food in until her intestines are emptied. After she's done her business, she'll come in the house and scarf down a whole plate (of little pieces-we have to make them bite size). So if your doggie isn't regular, you might want to keep him that way by feeding some pieces of apple as a treat (no skins) or using honey-nut cheerios as a treat to get things moving. |

| Sometimes they just get finicky. When I had Penny she would only eat off a plate. Never out of a bowl. I don't know why, but I gave in and let her eat off a plate.
