| Pups blood sugar keeps dropping..?..? hello- I have made another thread in here with Coccidia, but I didnt know if any one would know why his blood sugar keeps dropping. We are feeding him 12CC ever 3 hours and applying nutrical in the morning and at night. Also, applying karo at every feeding. We have to assist feed him as well. He does have coccidia, and we are currently treating it, but it is a pretty heavy case of coccidia. So, has anyone else had any of these symptoms before or know of anything>? please help. thanks. |

| Prayers for your baby. Keep a close watch on him and hopefully some folks will have some more good advice for you. Maybe try the pedialyte like Chachi suggested. Good luck!

| Update * Well, Spike is fighting now to be assist fed and is still very lazy. The vet called us this morning to ask how he is doing to see if the shot has helped at all. Well, we told him no, and the Vet wants him to come back and stay the day with them at the office so they can monitor him and try and figure what is wrong. He is looking at the X-rays and wondering if his organs arent fully developed or something. But I dont understand how, his blood sugar can drop so low after being assist fed every 3 hours with karo and then jump right back up after eating. So the doct is going to watch over him today and try some more things. I will keep you posted. |

| I was just wondering, what are you feeding him? The Karo is great to bring them around in an emergency, but it has this funny effect of spiking their blood sugar, leading to a drop Here's a link to the formula given to me by a breeder with 30 years experience that saved my Luna's life. I only had to force feed her once or twice, and she started pigging out Pups need good carbs plus protein to keep their blood sugar stable, and this does the trick http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58036 I pray that your darling baby is better soon

| My Mia suffered from low sugar she would shake her head and rub herself on the floor so maybe it's a reaction from that. I gave her nutracal once in the morning and once at night before bed.

| *UPDATE* Well, Spike spent the day at the Vet's office and they ran all kinds of tests on him. Spike was getting an ear infection, so they treated that, plus albon for the coccidia. The vet read the fine print on the emergency doctors papers and I guess we were not feeding him enough. The nurse at the vet fed him over double what we were and he was running around and playing, barking, etc. So one of the nurses who works at the vet office, used to have a yorkie and he just died not to long ago, so she offered to take him and watch him over for a couple days and let the vet know what is going on. So he is doing well. Also we are feeding him some A/D food. |

| I dont think its the vet. He is a great vet and a great guy. He called us asking if he can take the dog in to his office all day to monitor and watch him to see how he acts and see what he does. This vet has done more for this dog than any other vet or animal hospital around. He is very thorough and wants to help us out. My mother-in-law has 2 yorkies and takes them to the same guy and loves him as well. We believe he is a great vet and will consult with others to determine the problem. |

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Glad to hear there is improvement. I agree tho I would not use Kayro unless you know he is having a drop it does cause fast drops in blood sugar. The only time i used Kayro was when Diggy literally had a seizure the rest i tried to use food to control. I was told to use complex carbs as they break down to sugars and are much slower in breaking down than Kayro or even nutrical. Diggy ate a lot of plain rice, noodles, baby carrots, sweet potato, baked potato and meat. I could not tell when his sugar was dropping as he would wake up having seizures or after a long sleep and before i could get food in him (trust me i tried to do it fast) he would fall over into full blown seizures...Im so sorry your going through this and even more sorry for your baby. Glad he is up and feeling better and trust me ANYTHING he will eat let him eat its short term and they outgrow this!! I broke many of the feeding rules with Diggy but in the end it may have saved his life! Will your baby eat Cheerios?? I gave Diggy a few cheerio's probably every 30 minutes I know not ideal but it did keep something (sugar) in his system without a huge spike and drop. Please keep us posted!

I think that they should go over the papers better with owners to make sure their is no misunderstandings or if their is a question you can ask. I unfortunately have had experience dealing with medical problems with my human son and I alway's have them go over the papers because most of the time they are in a rush to get moving to the next person. I figure that I have to pay them then I will not be leaving till I know what needs to be done to get my child healthy and some times their writing is not the best to read, so I want verbal along with the written care instructions. I will expect the same for a vet! | |
