| liver shunt our 3 year old female was thought to have a shunt showing on the sonogram calling for an intrusive operation to eyeball the possible shunt plus obtain a biopsy...Everything negative and 2500 dollars later the little thing has lost a pound and has a scar from pubis to sternum..Isn't there some way to determine the presence or lack there of of this shunt ?..which they say are common in one degree or another in small Yorkies..She's eating again after 3 days but now needs vitamin K and has a slight fever..just venting of course-she's worth much more than the money....but I would like to know if I could have gone another route to find out that her liver was normal... |

| Liver biopsy is usually used to check for vacular abnormalities (MVD in particular). It is good that they ruled that out. There are other ways to check for shunts. They could have done a portogram or scintography.

| Yes but Ellie has been having some urinary incontinence problems (especially after her spay) and I am really beginning to worry so the biopsy results aren't the first thing on my mind. To the original poster, vets do ultrasound to check for shunts but a lot the time it is a waste of money because they need to be expert to read it.

| If the vet insists on ultrasound I believe it is doppler that you SHOULD get.
