| Need help - collapsed trachea I just found this board, I'm trying to help my parents make a decision regarding their five year old Yorkie. She has a collapsing trachea. They've tried to manage it via weight mgmt and off and on medicines (steroids) but it has gotten to the point where none of this is helping. They thought she was going to die last night, she could barely breathe. They've seen countless vets. They've done one surgery, to shorten an elongated palate ($1200) and it did not help. The doctor says the only thing left is a surgery to insert a stent. It would be about $4000. Has anyone here had this done to their Yorkie or know of a Yorkie that has had the surgery? Was the surgery successful? How many years did they have their Yorkie afterwards? It is a lot of money, but she is only 5 years old. If they can be given more years with her, it would be worth it. Any insight or advice would be appreciated. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I had to put my last Yorkie, Gracie down at 6 1/2 years of age about 9 years ago from a severe collapsing trachea. She started with it at about 5 1/2 years old and would have bad episodes of not being able to breathe. AS she approached 6years old she got real bad, her lungs and heart were effected so they kept trying different meds and they would help a little until about 2 months before I had to make the horrible decision to put her down. I had a bronchoscopy done, took her to a specialist and contacted Texas A& M vet clinic. They sent me a research paper they had just done on CT and where Gracie's was collapsed, in the thoracic area, they had not had good outcomes with the surgery. So I decided to let her go, she was so sick and couldn't breathe. I had spent over 4,000.00 on her by then and would have glady had the surgery if it would have helped but it wouldn't. I would see if Texas A & M has any newer studies. You can call them and they are very helpful. If you want to know more please PM me. Good Luck and my prayers are with you and your parents, I know how difficult it is. Gracie was my sweet baby.

| First, I am so sorry to hear about your baby. Now, here is hopefully a good part..there are vets at the Univ PA vet school who have worked with a human anesthesiologist to develop a stent that from what I gathered, was a more reasonable procedure. I THINK iIread about this in a past issue of Dog Fancy.. Prayers from Rini's cuties.. |

| This is heartbreaking. I understand this happens to adult Yorkies sometimes. I don't have anything to offer, but wish all of you the best in your decision. It is a tough one, but I don't know much about this illness. Please keep us posted. Kate

| Thanks for all your messages of support! She has an appt on 3/9 to see if she's a good candidate for surgery. They are going to put her under so they can take a look around (X-rays, etc). It's funny, she has some good days and some bad days where it's like she's not going to make it. We don't know why some days she's so much worse than others. |

| The tests have shown that she is a good candidate for the surgery. The surgeon said approx 30% of the dogs' bodies reject the stint. I wish that number was lower, but we're going to take the chance, spend the thousands, and go ahead and get the surgery done. Most likely next week. Thanks for all the support! |
