In light of the dog food recall,...RE: brand name dog food versus non-brand name

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: DomLee

In light of the MenuFoods cat/dog food recall, would you still pay more for a "brand name" such as Nutro...when the food is essentially coming off the same belt/assembly line?

I'm curious. I'm sure the formulation CAN be different for a few brands, such as they add a few more vitamins. But the base product is still the same.

What are your thoughts?

(And for those of you who are concerned about the food recall, here is the list of recalled products. http://www.menufoods.com/recall/index.html)

Posted by: Potter

I am not sure if I want to pay for kibbles at all now since feeding mine with home cooked food although I still mix some Canidae kibbles. One, he voluntarily eats his food now and loves it. I used to have to literally force him to eat. Two, I don't have to worry so much about the quality, or some kind of situation that can cause poisoning to my dog. It just gets dissapointing when you are spending money thinking you are buying the best for your dog and then suddenly you realize it isn't so. With what I prepare myself, I know what he is getting and it is human grade for sure.

Posted by: LoveMyGirlz

My husband brought up the same point!! Crazy! I really don't know what I'm going to do yet...but I will be researching what some of the members here use!

Posted by: Ozzie'sperson

As much of a pain as homecooking can be, I am SO glad we do after all the recalls. We're very careful about what we buy and how we prepare it, so barring some kind of grocery taint, we know exactly what they're getting!

What a relief ...

Me, too!!!

When you look at the situation I am not sure about you but it pisses me off. They charge from a-z price wise for baisically the same food just packaged under another name. I have been feeding Merrick's which is made from organic stuff and I only feed dry food but I am a bit wary of the what if's.

Nutro is on the list! thats what i've been feeding...looks like i'm going to find a new food.

Posted by: YorkieRose

When my brother-in-law was a teen, he worked at a well known brand name pickle factory...a certain amount of the same pickles were sold with a generic store label... some were expensive and some were cheap, but they were all the same pickle.

My dogs do not canned food..they eat dry with human food as a suppliment..I may stop all dog food and make the recipe on DR. Foxe's web site...

if you were feeding the dry then you don't have to worry about it. Its only certain types of food that are being recalled.

also if hasnt been stated yet exactly what has caused the problem. That will be an interesting piece of information to learn. Also DomLee brings up a good point. I'm curious to know if the foods are packaged at this place or made at this place. Most of hte foods on that list sound like crappy store brands but i haven't heard of all of them so i can't be sure. I wonder how nutro can be on that same list if its supposed to be much better for our pets. I've always doubted nutro for some reason and never gave it to morgan, now i'm glad i did, even tho i would be feeding her the dry version.

Wheat Gluten was identified today as the culprit.

you make your own dog food? do you have any recipes that you could share with us for our yorkies? i just do not know what to feed him anymore after all these recalls. i am feeding him royal canin and merrick, but last night i looked up recalls on merrick food in a google search and it does not look that good either. i really am beside myself. thanks elle57

Was nutro dry food or wet? I give mine the Nutro Lamb and Rice dry? If there's a chance my guys can get sick I'm bringing the bag back, and demanding my money back.

The food in the recall for Nutro...is WET food. The dry is fine.

Personally, I think everyone needs to read the list before getting upset.
It is only isolated to a few select products. Yes, a lot of brands are involved, but only a select product offering within each brand.

YorkieRose

What recipe/website are you referring to?
Do you have a link to the website?

Thank you.

i agree with you. I know everyone is in an uproar about this recall list but please take the time to read everything on the site before getting upset. DRY FOOD has NOT been recalled and is safe to feed your pets.

Well, and I think I agree that if my dog food company is recalling ANY of the food they make, I should and would question ALL the food that comes from that plant!! Better safe than sorry and I would absolutely stop feeding my brand, wet or dry, if the name was on the list. Thats just me....the over protective mom

I agree with you 100%. I am now worried about all dog food. We don't know what the heck they are doing. We just trust them. My friend had her yorkie die Thursday and she has no idea why. She had to go out of town and her husband was home with the pup. Her husband called her Thursday morning and said she needed to get back ASAP as she was not feeling well. By the time she got home that afternoon she had died. No idea why. She feeds Science Diet DRY that is not on the list but who knows.

You're overreacting (understandably so though).

MenuFoods has as least two plants. So the recall may be isolated to only one plant. If anything, they may produce certain products at each plant in order to specialize. Therefore, in the event of a recall,...odds are...only certain products needs to be recalled, and not EVERY product the entire company makes.

The recent spinach recall, affected multiple brands. Isolated to a farm in CA. But that doesn't mean the "farm" has to recall every product it makes (such as strawberries or other products). Only the area where they grew spinach was affected.

I don't know how "scientific" it is but we now feed all THREE pets ( Ozzie plus two cats ) home cookin.'

Ozzie has been eating this stuff since puppyhood because he has always had an ultra-sensitive gut. We boil hamburger (ground chuck or ground round), chicken breasts, and pork chops (usually sirloin boneless). All EXCESSIVE fat is cut off before cooking. They do need a bit of fat in the diet but I never leave fat around the edges of anything.

I buy canned green beans (the no salt or sugar variety), cook fresh carrots, broccoli, rice and occasionally vermicelli (the really skinny spaghetti), and low-fat cottage cheese. Also now have a healthy supply of Yo Baby! yogurt (vanilla and banana pack).

Once cooked, each type of meat is ground separately by Cuisinart and put in its own container. At meal time, each gets meat and at least one veggie and at least once a day a tablespoon (or so, Ozzie weighs 13 pounds!) each of cottage cheese and yogurt. We switch out what they have so they aren't eating the same thing meal after meal, but it all has the same core ingredients.

Both cats also have a serving of crunchies laid out at least once each day and also get tuna (mixed with one of the other meats) a couple times a week.

The kitten eats three times a day and Ozzie and my aged cat (15 next month!) both eat twice.

NOTE: Ozzie no longer eats pork at vet's advice. I don't necessarily agree, but I don't have DVM after my name! Otherwise, the vet says all our guys eat well and should be getting enough of everything. (Well yeah -- they eat better than ME! )

Don't know if that is something that would work for you, but has fared well for us.

I know that the recall is for WET food only, but I agree w/ some above that if that company has food being recalled, I am doubting it has a good food company for my Mojo.....You kind of lose some trust (I guess) in the companies that are being recalled. Even though Mojo's food was on the list of wet foods, I still have that doubt and uneasy feeling feeding him the dry food.

My husband said that most foods are made by the same place, just a different name and price go on the packaging....so it is no wonder why so many are being recalled. (like the pickle post above).

I would pay more for a brand of food that I can trust was 100% healthy, organic and that Mojo would eat on his own. Like most that posted, Mojo wouldn't eat other foods on his own or had stomache troubles w/ them. So, to find one that works (Nutro natural choice for sensitive stomaches - lamb and rice) was a blessing....but then, to have that name associated w/ a recall (even though it is said to just be the wet foods)....that leaves a big sick and upsetting feeling in my gut!!!

(((aurgh)))

You can call it "over reacting," I call it being safe rather than sorry. I believe, for me, the point here is WHAT ARE WE FEEDING OUR BABIES? And its something that has made me re-evaluate dog food in general and make better choices. It is not the fact that "oopps something 'bad' was mistakingly added to the mix without anyone knowing it was contaminated" but more of "Do they really care WHAT is going into the recipe at all and if the ingredient that was "contaminated" was RAT POISON would they report it as such?? That is now reported that it was found in the contaminated food...still think we should believe the rest of the food from that company is "safe?" Isn't there "wheat gluten" in dry foods (the other named "culprit")? Road kill and left over carcus is not put in there by accident....

I agree to the last two posts completely.
I did have some of the wet Nutro packets and cans. I will not even buy Nutro dry. I just don't feel it is safe. But that is my opinion. Just like I will not buy ANY food or brand that was on that list. Now again just like the above poster said. Lots of foods are made by one company and given other names look at the Peanut Buter recall a while back. I would never have thought Peter Pan would have been a store brand. Go figure.

I went and found some Canidae today. I hope my babies will eat it. I also found another all stages food at Petco called Nature's Recipe. Has anyone tried this food? It sounds pretty good but IDK.

i do not know what foods arwe good any more. i am going to go with making my own. maybe 1/2 to hour every 2 weeks or so. i will make my own and freeze it, and buy missing link to give my 6 lb yorkie. i am not going to take any chances of losing him, i am so afraid right now. i am currently feeding him merrick canned and royal canin dry. but who knows ?

Posted by: DomLee

Most food companies use the same processing plants.

I don't remember the brand name, but there is a company that repackages the same product for Trader Joe's. So in effect, you pay more for the brand name, when compared to a smaller company like Trader Joe's.

Same basic stuff. Different label.
