| Shock Collars, Electric Fences I've been reading a lot about shock collars and electric fences. PLEASE do NOT turn this thread into a debate. I do not want us to argue. I just want to see how many people would use a shock collar and/or an electric fence. I'm curious. I'll go first and answer NO, I would never use a shock collar or an electric fence.

| I use the small sonic collar that beeps when they bark. It works great most of the time. But you know yorkies....when they want to bark at something you just can't shut them up. lol

| I wouldn't want to do anything that would hurt them...just raising my voice makes them give me that sad little puppy look. That's bad enough...

| Yes I have Now that I have voted I have said yes to both, so I will at least say my bit. The electric fence question didn't state particular use with a dog, I wouldnt use it with a dog , as I want my dogs trained to stay put wether or not there is a barrier there, but I have of course used the electric fence for the Horses I have had in the past, which were extremely harsh on wooden ones. Electric shock collars....this item has pluss and minuses to it, but yes we have used them in the past on our border collie, and only durring supervision and only until she was trained. I make it a practice to never use anything on my pets I wouldnt be willing to try out myself....except for the obvious collars leads ect. I tried this shock collar out on myself ( against the directions on the box) I found that the low setting for a thick furred thick skinned dog like a border collie was not going to do anything at all, it was a very minor pulse on low, the medium setting was perfect , just a bit of a shock..as in surprize not electrical pain.........it didn't hurt my non fur covered neck in the least, the highest level I have not tested and wouldn not test as I would never use it anyways. Our Border collies barking obsession ended the day we began with the collar, it took only 3 weeks to fully train her, and she never wore it since. I would personally never use the collar on the tiny pocket breed fur babies, they just are too fragile ..the actual surprize may be too great for them to bare.I felt no pain only surprize like when my brother talked me into touching my tongue to a small square battery as a young girl. Ok im done jabbering on....so yes and yes..but both with full knowledge and understanding of the product and used in a responsible and controled way.

| I agree with JenieK.....I would use those on a large breed, but not on yorkies. We had a electric fence/shock collar for our Jack Russell Terrier when I was growing up. I just think our guys are too sensitive and delicate. |

| I voted "no" to this and here's why. i live on a busy street and decided to get invisible fence installed. When i first called i said that i had a 3lb Yorkie (which she's 4) and they said she would get a cat collar. They came out installed it and i paid for the training package and all. She was training great with the flags, well it was time for her first correction and thats when everything changed. The trainer made us walk across the street call her and let her get the correction (it was the lowest it could go) and i've NEVER EVER seen something like i saw when she got that correction. She was flipping around like a fish out of water, yelped like i NEVER heard of, if that trainer did not pull her out - she would've never got out until the correction was finished (15 seconds) i broke down immediately and cried. i feel scared for what i witnessed and felt horrible for what happened to her. I made them come unistall it and get my money back. she didnt want to go outside after that. Also i dont have a big yard so when it was run up the driveway and our cars were parked in it - it would trigger it sooner, which i didnt think was good. I would recommend it for bigger dogs but not for smaller dogs. A dog that could handle a corection like that. i have nitemares about this day still, i will NEVER be able to forget what i saw.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I don't like collars...PERIOD. But, I do have an electric fence (no collar needed) that pulsates but hasn't worked in a while. That's how I lost Rebel a while back. When it worked, he stayed in the yard. I'm not going to get into this again but there is another thread (locked) on this subject which I've voiced my opinion on.

| shock collars & fences I think the shock collars for barking are horrible. Imagine if you were shocked everytime you tried to talk-they should be banned. Try Obedience classes & training. I think this poll is for more of the boundary type collars & fences. If you can not have a regular fence then I guess, but I would be very leary of using it with a small breed dog. Plus they do not keep other dogs out who do not have a compatible collar on, so it doesnt protect your dog enough so why risk it. |
