| Probiotics I'm having a hard time picking one because of concerns over ingredients. What do you use? If you use a product that is meant for humans, did your vet approve it?

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I've used Fast Track before and wasn't impressed. Currently we are using Wysong's, generally I trust their products. My vet recommends the Forti Flora, but I think it's the one most vets promote, being a Purina product

| I give mine lactobacillus. Which is a probiotic. I buy it at the pharmacy & use a pill splitter to cut the pills into quarters. I put a quarter tablet in their wet food at dinner time. It is inexpensive, about $10.00 and lasts a couple of months. My vet had me give it to Bailey, who was having a lot of intestinal upsets. It keeps them both healthy & they rarely get tummy upsets or diarrhea when taking it.

| Probiotics help balance the microflora in the intestines. When a pet takes antibiotics, they kill off the bad bacteria and the good bacteria. Probiotics help replace the good. It can also be helpful with intestinal disease.

| Enterococcus faecium The inclusion of Enterococcus faecium in 12 products was interesting, considering the increasing concern being expressed about the use of enterococci as probiotics because of their pathogenic potential and relatively high level of antimicrobial resistance (7,8,9). Evaluation of deficiencies in labeling of commercial probiotics The whole article is a good read. I'm a bit concerned because it seems most of the pet products contain this and Metronidazole is an anti-microbial. It can also be pathogenic? Maybe this only applies to humans? They did look at human and animals products though. I am also being cautious because quite a few products are mislabeled and don't have enough of anything in them to be any good. I trust Nutramax on this issue but not with the inclusion of this ingredient. What do you think?

| Probiotics and Medical Nutrition Therapy That link contains another good article that you will enjoy and find interesting... I use VSL#3 because it has a significant amount of research backing its claims. This article includes info on that. Not only do I give it to Miko for his liver problems (history of HE), but also for his GI issues...Of course, he only gets a fraction of the recommended dose for humans (adults/children)... If you don't feel comfortable with the inclusion of that strain, then I would try to find a different one. I would probably stay away from that for now, at least until there's more research if you don't feel comfortable. None of the probiotics I've used have contained that strain, so I can't tell you personally about its effects. There's a little bit of info on its effects in the article above but not much...Also, if you scroll to the bottom, there are some charts. I know I'm probably a skeptic, but I don't trust a lot of pet products as much unless they have research backing them...

My two or three top veterinary probiotic choices contain this, so I am a bit frustrated. Then there is Pet Flora that won't even tell you what strains it contains. I want to use VSL but the vet said something about only using veterinary products for this in passing. I guess I have to ask her why. Marci, the one you posted looks interesting but what are the affects of supplementing with lipase and amylase? The body doesn't stop producing its own, does it?
