IMO zooms are good for maybe nature for far in the daylight. But primes take superior pictures.

You are understanding it correctly. I learned using a 50mm lens, which on a 35 "full frame" camera is like what your eyes see. It's good to zoom with your feet to see different perspectives. Zoom lenses are great for convenience, but I love using prime lenses. Today's cameras do really well with low light, but still love the light capturing ability of primes and also the beautiful bokeh that can be achieved with many primes.

Camera

Speaking of camera's . . . mine Sucks. Kodak Share with 25x zoom/ 16 megapixels. The photos that I posted of my grand daughter are from my daughters phone. Which is even better than my camera !!

I would love to buy a new one but not sure what to get. I love the clarity that Priscilla's camera has so bright and very clear it shows every detail. Plus those of you who know Mike, know that he also takes some really awesome photos . . If only my camera did half as good. His photos almost look like HD like my digital TV. Do they make a HD camera ?

So what would you suggest ?

Keep in mine that I need to be able to see, hold and test it out in the store before making the purchase. So these are the major local stores we have: Walmart, Sears, Radio Shack, Macys, JC Pennys & Kohls. I want to stay under $350 w/tax if at all possible.

I'm not sure if JCP, Kohl's, or Macy's sells cameras. I know Walmart does, so does Target. I haven't been to Sears in years but they have lots of electronics so I would think they do. Do you have Best Buy near you? I think go to a brick and mortar shop and choose and feel which one you like. Then look online if you can get one for cheaper.

I will say though, for that price point, you will still most likely be in the point and shoot category. That was what I had before, a Panasonic Lumix.

But to get something like Mike's, is in the thousands. His is a pro camera. Mine is not a pro level camera at all. It's considered an entry level enthusiast level camera. It was a few years old (but new in box) so I got it for $400, but the new/current model of it is about $800. That is with one lens (called the kit lens).

I went to Best Buy a few weeks ago and I did see a few cameras in the $300 range (some even less) that look like a DSLR but you cannot remove the lens. They do look kinda cheapy though, but I would assume the larger body could house a larger sensor, and you want a larger sensor to perform better in low light. However, I fiddled around with some of these, and you cannot adjust the settings manually. It's basically a point and shoot camera but with a larger body (and possibly larger sensor).

No Best Buy and yes that's a good idea, on line is normally cheaper.

Thanks for the input, I would love to have with the removable zoom lenses or something with similar settings.

What brand, X zoom and pixels would you/anyone suggest ? It doesn't have to have removable lenses just a nice aim and shoot style better that what I already have would be good.

Is this a fairly newish camera...bc w/ 25x zoom and 16mgpixels, you should be able to capture some decent stuff with this camera. Are you sure that maybe you just haven't worked w/ it enough? Does it have pre-sets like closeup, landscape, action/sport, portrait, night...etc...?

It sounds like you already have a decent point-and-shoot camera. But, if you want a suggestion for a small one - I also have a Panasonic Lumix, an older one, w/ 10x zoom...takes great pics! The Lumix has a Leica lens on it, which is a *great* lens quality.

One thing about point and shoot cameras is there can be a short delay from the time you press the button to the time the picture is taken, if there is movement during that delay it can blur the photos. Sometimes, you press the button before you are actually ready for the photo to be taken, or you begin to lower the camera too quickly after pressing the button. This can be true with phone cameras too, and I myself am guilty of getting in too big a hurry with my photos. It's like my brain is already moving on to the next step before my hands are ready to go. or something like that. I'm constantly reminding myself to slow down. LOL. But your camera should take a nice photo.

That could be, I haven't done to much with it. It has several settings for different type photos. I may have to work with it more. My main issue is clarity. Not blurring I don't have an issue with that just clarity and lighting.

Dont' know what that "Lumix" lens is but I will look into it.

Thanks Shelly, no problem with that. I wait until the little green frame pops up.

I was just giving you a camera suggestion: the Panasonic Lumix; then I mentioned that the Lumix has a Leica lens, which is a great lens quality.

I wonder about noise too, but they must have something in their sensor to mitigate some of it somehow. FUN!

But look at you...a few months ago maybe not talking much about this "ISO" thing, and now here you are talking about ISO noise - love it !
