| "Strangest" or most exotic food you've ever tried Ok, so I watch a lot of Food TV stuff - like tons - and I'm not shy about trying anything once. STRANGELY, though, I have an aversion to haggis and blood pudding. I think I'm just too American to go there...I don't know. Time will tell... And yet..I have tried zebra, kangaroo and and Kudu, I believe it was... I have also had goat and reindeer. I'm sure I've had more things but I can't remember off the top of my head. Some things I absolutely refuse to eat are bologna or hot dogs which may explain the haggis thing... Share your experiences!!!!! and don't feel shy about commenting on mine.. Oh, and for those who wonder like I did, zebra steak does not come with stripes! |

| I tasted octopus when I was a kid just to say I tried it. I am not very daring though since I wont try anything that looks disgusting to me such as sushi or shrimp. Saw them cooking calf eyeballs today in a Chopped episode. I have been hooked on the show Anthony Burdain Parts Unknown seeing the stomach turning things people eat. Yuck. I saw him eat blood soup. No way!

| You can eat zebra? I had no idea! How was it? I am the queen of eating weird foods. My favorites are offals, tripe, chitterlings/chitlins (also prefer sausages with natural casing, intestinal casing), crab/shrimp/lobster brains, fish eggs, and my fave is uni (sea urchin) so much so I named my dog Uni. I absolutely love sushi and tried sashimi when I was a preteen. My mom and sis were eating it and I asked them what it was. They told me to try it first and then see if I like it, then they would tell me what it was. I said I liked it and then they told me it was raw fish. After that I wanted to try every weird thing on the menu. As far as octopus, I first had it as nigiri at a sushi place and I still hate it. It's so tough and hard. Now Mexican or Greek style I am all over that! So tender and yummy. I used to eat fish eyeballs, but don't anymore. I still eat their brains. You know to gain their knowledge. I don't not try anything just bc it looks gross or smells different. If it is a delicacy somewhere in the world, I will try it. Millions of people can't be wrong! The only thing I won't try is something that is still alive and kicking, like how Koreans eat live baby octopus. I have tried blood pudding and Asians have blood cubes similar to blood pudding but much less dense, more like jello or tofu. I don't care for the flavor. I don't mind that it's blood, it's the iron taste I don't care for. One of my favorite things is the Thousand year old Egg. Or I just call it the black egg. It's a duck egg preserved in tea leaves but some cheaper brands use lye and it gives it a very chemical off putting aroma to it. I saw an episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and he could not swallow it. I was like "noob!" It's so good with some soy sauce and sesame oil and green onion, or in rice congee. I would like to try a balut egg one day but would like someone who enjoys them to show me how to eat them. I've tried different types of snails. French kind is just smothered in garlic and butter, but the Viet kind they have many different varieties in coconut curry type sauce. Just re-tried frog legs again and they are good. They do taste like chicken. My brother even thought it was a chicken wing that had weird bones. LOL I'll post more if I remember more.

| Maybe not disgusting, but it doesn't look appetizing to me. My niece has been trying to get me to try it but I won't. It's like shrimp...if I dont like how it looks, I'm not going to put it in my mouth.

| Fair enough. MORE FOR ME! Now if I tell you this you will NEVER eat shrimp and shellfish. They are like the roaches of the sea. They are part of the "clean up crew" and eat dead stuff that ends up at the bottom of the ocean. Plus they have an exoskeleton like insects. Even crawfish are nicknamed bugs.

| Good for you for trying tripe though! There are two different kinds. One is honeycomb, and I forget the other what it's called. But I prefer the non honeycomb one. Also there are different ways to cook it that very much vary the end result. Pho is one of my favorite foods and they put tripe in the "dac biet" version (the one with everything). It's just cooked plain, totally white (it's white or very pale when raw) and just sliced thin. It really has no flavor and it's kind of crunchy, like a wood ear fungus or jellyfish but I don't think those comparisons would help you. LOL Crunchy like a pig ear but harder. Like cartilidge. Anyway I don't like tripe in pho. But I LOVE it in menudo, but only if they don't use the honeycomb type. It's so soft and tender like chewing on a piece of fat that's been stewed for hours, just melts in your mouth, and takes on the flavors of the soup; beefy, salty, spicy, sour. YUM! Oh yeah, lengua is one of my favorite taco fillings. That and cabeza. It's actually cheek, not the brain. That's sesos and I didn't care for it.

Oh my gosh! How amazing are you with your adventures in food...lol! I have had octopus, I forgot about that but I guess it's because I thought it wasn't exotic. However, it must be cuz if I told my parents about it they'd freak out..haha! My hubby loves octopus and all manner of seafood which others can't abide! I have also had fish eggs (roe or caviar) and I like it but I have never eaten the brains of any fish as far as I'm aware? I have also never tried tripe and I think that's because my MIL put me off by how she described it..she loves it, btw. Sushi is amazing! It's one of my fave things to eat but I'm very mistrustful re: the prep of it. Things can go badly wrong if not prepared properly so it is a rare treat for me. The Thousand Year Old Egg sounds interesting!! Zebra is delicious. It's very gamey but not overwhelmingly so... it's very hard to explain it exactly. Have you ever had horse meat? I haven't but, if you have, it may be comparable? It may not! Unsure. I'd definitely have it again, though. I liked it far more than I liked 'roo which I found tough and tasteless in comparison to other game but that may also be down to how I cooked it, which is to say, I burned it! I have eaten quail eggs, which are nice and I love pheasant. These types of things are not readily available in my native OK so I'm not sure how truly exotic they are as they are fairly common in UK markets! I LOVE Anthony Bourdain! His face when he tries some of these foods is absolutely priceless!!!! He is very brave, though, I have to give him that. One of my favorite episodes is when he stopped by Russia and he almost "ate" vodka the entire time! | |

| Did you have to go to Africa to have zebra? I haven't traveled a ton. Mostly only to the Caribbean and once to London, once to several provinces in China, and then just around the states. I wanted to try turtle last time in the Caribbean but didn't get a chance. Never had 'roo or horse. Octopus isn't exotic in many countries but in the US it is I guess. I think it's how it looks that most people wouldn't want to eat it. But if prepared incorrectly, it's terrible. Fish brains I've been eating since a kid. Asians always cook the fish whole, so the head is always attached. The cheeks and collar is the best part, and my mom told me to suck the brains out of the skull, which is like a jelly consistency, very flavorful. I have no idea why I started to eat the eyeballs but also very tasty jelly texture. But you have to spit out the cornea and there's a hard bone type ball inside. LOL If you get the chance, try menudo. That made me love tripe, bc before like I said I only had it in pho and didn't like it. How did your MIL describe it to you? And if you have a Taiwanese eatery near you, they will have the 1000 year old egg. Try it, but there's no way to know the brand they use. Or go to a Chinese market and they will have it for sure. I love quail egg, but it is the food with the highest cholesterol in that tiny thing so I don't eat them anymore. I don't think I've have pheasant before. I had rabbit at a churrascaria before though.
