| Anyone doing juicing/smoothies...... I just started doing this for health reasons mainly, with the added benefit of weight loss. I'm liking it so far, it seems pretty easy to get all my veg. in w/o all the chopping and cooking. Anyone else doing this?

| I love juicing! I especially like green. It can get quite expensive, though. What juicer do you have? |

| We had another juicing thread somewhere around here. I was juicing, using one of the Breville machines, and stopped bc it's a PITA to clean and you miss out on all that fiber and was a lot of waste. Now I make smoothies with the VitaMix almost everyday and I love it. I just put in whatever fruits and veggies I have on had. When berries are in season in summer I buy a ton and freeze them and stock up. I also add flax and Greek yogurt.

| How do you do it? What is it all about? I've heard of it but never got details about it. |

| I suppose it just another way to get more fruits and veggies in your diet. The amount of fruit and veggies I put in my VitaMix I could never eat all in one sitting, or get sick of it before I finish. You need a powerful blender to make smoothies. VitaMix is the brand that most juice chain shops use. I went through a $40-50 blender a month for a few months before splurging on the VM. You put the more softer, watery ingredients and the bottom, the more firmer or frozen ones at the top. Some people here have had success with the Magic Bullet, but I can't barely even make a smooth hummus in mine with soft garbanzo beans in under 5 or 10 mins. The VM makes a very smooth smoothie in less than 1 min. I say skip juicing. It's a machine that can only do one thing and it's pretty wasteful. You aren't eating any of the fiber.

| Juicing is only getting the juice out of the fruit or veggie. Smoothies use the whole thing and use a blender to make it drinkable. |

So far I like it but after doing so more reading I prefer the blender over a "juicer" because of the fiber issue and the mess the hassle of breaking down the juicer to clean it.

| At first all I knew was it was a way to get your veg. in in a fast and efficient way. I like the fact I don't have to chop and cook my vegetables. It's really great. Right now I try to put a 3-1 ratio in mine because I don't want to be making a fruit smoothie, I want it for health reasons so I'm trying to have more veg. Since it's made in a blender it's texture is more of a smoothie consistency rather than a watery consistency from a juicer. I do add in some water to thin it out.

I've used this one by Dr. Oz for low cal: 3/4c. kale, 1/4 c. cucumber, 1/4 c. celery, 1/2 c. strawberries and 1/2c. water. I don't measure this anymore I just throw it in. I'll sub spinach for the kale and zucchini instead of the cucumber or 1/2 banana or a handful blueberries instead of the strawberries.Really the combination is endless. I just try not make ir more veg based and not fruit based. You should mix it up every week and not do the same thing week after week. For the greens you can use bok choy, spinach, arugula, Swiss chard, collard greens but some will have a bitterness to them. For some extra added health benefits some people will add in 1tbsp. organic coconut oil, flax seeds, avocado, chia seeds, protein powder, flax oil, almond butter, etc etc. Some people will use coconut water or almond milk instead of the water. I don't because I don't want the added calories. If the fruit is frozen it's ok it will make it kind of slushy.
