Thor's Human Donating Member | Does anyone here cook all their meals from scratch? If so, how do you manage it? How often do you go grocery shopping? How much food do you make ahead of time? How much time do you spend each day cooking? Do you get tired eating the same thing several days in a row? I've been cooking more recently, but I'm pretty inefficient. I go to the grocery store several times / week, and if I try to make food ahead of time, it usually only lasts a day or two.

| For humans or for the furkids? If for humans, I'd love to be able to home cook all my meals too. My problem is, I get bored with eating the same thing a lot and often. I need more, yet still simple, recipes.

| I do a lot of cooking but usually not every night. I'll make one big grocery trip on the weekend usually for staples, things for our lunch boxes, etc. then I might stop every other night or so on the way home for fresh stuff, veggies and fresh meat for whatever I'm making for supper that night. It's just the two of us so I try to make enough for supper that one or both of us can take the leftovers for lunch the next day or two and I can also have it for supper the next night if DH works late. We live in an apartment which has a teeny teeny tiny kitchen with very little storage space and nofreezer other than the refrigerator freezer so no room to buy bulk and stock ahead as much as I'd like to. |

| I re read your thread. You meant your own meals didn't you??? Sorry. Actually I try to make all my meals. Too much processed food makes me feel sick if I eat it too often. It's really a lot less expensive if you make stuff ahead a time and store or freeze it. Things like Vegetable beef stew is great reheated with freshly made corn bread. There are a lot websites with great ideas where you only buy a few things and can make a week worth of different meals.

| I havent been cooking lately but when I do, I spend a couple of hours rationing out raw meats....cleaning chicken or beef and weighing them out and putting them into little baggies in the freezer. Then I always have my meat ready to cook up fast with whatever veggie I have on hand. If I have nothing fresh on hand, I keep frozen veggies in the freezer. I just find that cleaning the meats takes me the longest so I like to do that part in advance. Then I can just stir fry it or bake something in the oven quickly etc. Once you get your routine down, it really isn't all that time consuming.

| 99% of everything I make is scratch for both my skin kid and my fur kids. I do leave kibble out for Bra'Tac as sometimes he also prefers that with his raw. I always have fresh vegee's like Edamame, snow peas, kale, carrots, and broccoli on hand. I also have a variety of grains, such as Oatmeal, white, black, and red rice, Quinoa, Amaranth, Barley, and whole wheat kernels in the pantry. I shop for all my meats by the month, because I buy them at Whole Foods. I only try to buy the organic free-range chicken, do to the sickly state of our chicken farms, and the inhumane treatment that most of them receive. I also only buy cattle that is only grass fed, because corn is not a food substance that is digestible by cattle, needless to say it causes them major issues. Hence, all the antibiotics that normal "corn-fed"cattle are injected with. Eggs and milk hold the same issues, so I stock up when I go. It does take time to do this, because when you come home you have to prep all the meats and vegges for either the freeze or fridge. But.....once you get the process down, it becomes second nature. We do not eat meat like most Americans as the main entree, to us, it is a side dish. So buying a better quality meat lasts us for quite awhile. When the pups need food, I pull the meat out of the freezer to thaw. Then just dice it up and then mix it with cooked Oatmeal or Quinoa or one of the other choices, and then add a mix of vegee's, their vitamin mineral supplements, their salmon oil or coconut oil, and their probiotic enzyme powder. This part usually only takes about 8-12 minutes. Not to long. Since I started this routine, Andromeda has gone off her allergy meds. She might get a pill every month, if that now. The Oatmeal has been a huge success with her IBD. So I usually try to make her grain Oatmeal because of its fiber content, calcium content, and its ability to absorb fluid and maintain stool shape. It is really nutritious dense. As for the skin kid....BK is a fav of his which I cannot seem to break. What are ya going to do, he is a teenager?! |

| I have always cooked. Raising six sons doesn't allow for many fast foods for sure. I was so used to cooking for a crowd then, but now with only me and my husband I tend to cook too much at a time. When all my boys were home, I let each one decide what they wanted to eat and it made everyone happy. I use to put up a months menu on the ref. so everyone would know what we were having. I could make one chicken feed seven of us for two dinners. Now days, I go thru cook books, pick out at least seven recipes, jot down any ingredients I need and only buy what's on my list. I save plenty this way. On days I have appointments or other things that take me out of the house, I make a slow cooker recipe. You just have to plan.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Thanks for the replies. Tell me, do you guys consider yourselves good cooks? I ask because one thing about my "everyday" cooking is that everything sort of tastes the same. I have two "standard" recipes right now - stuffed peppers, and chicken roasted with veggies.

| You know that is a great question. I cook everything from scratch. Most of the gals at work bring in things that they made. And I feel inadequate for some reason. I love to try new things but I don't consider myself a great cook. |

| I cook most all meals from scratch. It's too expensive to go out to eat alot. And sometimes eating out bothers my stomach. I'm making calzones for dinner tonight. I run out of ideas of what to make. |

| Yes, everything I make is from scratch. And, it varies all the time. I shop about twice per week. Since I live in the city I have access to local markets from which I buy my meats / fish / veggies. I only go to a supermarket once about every two weeks. Whole chickens are a terrific thing to roast, and they usually result in two dinner meals. Or, you can have one dinner meal and use the leftover to make chicken salad. You can use the neck and other parts to make stock, which can become chicken soup for a lunch or dinner. So, about 4 meals can result from 1 bird. |

| I consider myself a very good cook but I don't cook on a daily basis. I've always said that I'm more of an "event" cook. I just hate coming up with a daily menu. I usually cook on the weekends and we have my husbands kids over to eat. I also do freeze veggies in season and make homemade soup and such and freeze it. My husband owns restaurants so eating out is just too easy. I will say that I don't think I've ever eaten in his restaurant without modifying my order in order to make it healthier. It's hard enough because he owns Mexican restaurants. Oh - and I'm the queen of leftovers. I never throw food away. I love to come up with combinations to make it a different meal. Breakfast with Mexican leftovers is our favorite!

| I cook most things from scratch and Im a good cook. I like to cook with alot of herbs and spices. My favorite meal to cook and eat is my blackened chicken pasta and my tacos. I make chicken tacos and they are healthier for you and they taste great. If you want to be a good cook get a bunch of recipe books and try out the recipes and youll find ones you like. I get alot of good recipes off the net also
