YT Addict | Aspartame - Is it safe? I decided to open up a new thread on this topic, as I've been doing my research all morning and have come up with some very conflicting information on Aspartame. My sister used to suffer from horrible migraines, to the point where she was hospitalized. Doctors couldn't give her any relief but when she cut aspartame out of her diet the migraines went away, almost completely. After posting in http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...migraines.html I decided to do some more research regarding the topic. Some websites support it while others regard it as poison. Personally after seeing how it effected my sister, I avoid it but Health Canada acknowledges the safety of aspartame. What do you think?

| I honestly don't believe that it is safe. I used to use Aspartame, but now I use Stevia in the Raw. It is my understanding that Stevia comes from a plant and is safe. I do have to say I consume some in an occasional diet soft drink. Last edited by chattiesmom; 01-06-2011 at 10:47 AM. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It's not safe for dogs, no controversy there! If you suffer from migraines, I would definitely take it out of the diet, along with many other things. Different things affect different individuals differently, and I'm one of those people who generally believe in all things in moderation. However, if you have problems, keeping a food journal, can help you learn your own personal food weaknesses. It's really hard to prove something is unsafe, if it only affects a small number of people.

| I'd like to know the truth about aspertame too because I have also read some of those conflicting reports. I had a talk with my doctor not too long ago though. She wanted me to restrict my salt and caffiene intake. I admit I am a diet coke juhnke...it's my one major weakness. She told me to drink crystal light instead. I really felt that was like trading one bad habit for another and asked her about the aspertame in Crystal Light. She said it was better for you than the caffiene. So, I don't know. Instead, I just cut my consuption of Dt. Coke way back and force myself to drink water instead.

| Definitely not good for you. There was an article put out a few years back saying it can also cause MS. I think cancer as well. Stay away from anything that isn't all natural and be safe.

| There have been many medical articles indicating that regular use of Aspartame actually changes the chemistry of the brain. It is also one of the substances you are told to not consume while pregnant. It seems that information you will find saying it is safe are funded by groups that benefit from Aspartame consumption......

I believe many things can change the chemistry of the brain, including a good/healthy diet, physical exercise, mental exercise. I do agree that natural sugar or no sugar is better.

| Artificial sweeteners of any kind give me headaches and hives so that tells me something right there. They also affect my concentration and my job requires me to be thinking all day long and if you try to do that with a headache, it's nauseating. I may be wrong on this but I thought I had read a few years back that aspartame was a pesticide that stored in the liver. That seemed scary to me.

| I can't have artificial sweeteners, they give me migraines. Had Christmas dinner one year at my brother and sister in laws. I got a real bad migraine. Bruce called them later and asked if they had used any artificial sweetenets. My sister in law had used Splenda in the dessert! If I don't want to use sugar I use Stevia.
