| Advice Needed ... I'm Worried!! How do you know when your dog is in heat? I'm really freaking out right now because I have NEVER had a pet go into heat before! All of my dogs have been spayed/neutered at about 6 months of age. As most of you know, Cali isn't spayed yet due to her extremely tiny size of only 1 lb and 2 ounces. Last night after I got home from work, Jim went to change the wee wee pads and he noticed 3 TINY little drops of blood on the pad. My first reaction was to freak out and cry like a baby all the while hugging my 3 dogs like some deranged lunatic. (Yep, that's me ... the worry wart!) But Jim made a good point ... Cali could be in heat. So my question is ... how do I know FOR SURE that she's in heat and not sick? For that matter, it could be any three of my babies that are sick! How do I know for sure that Cali is in heat? I'm soooo upset over this. I'm a firm believer in spaying/neutering your pets and I so badly want to spay Cali but at several different vets and specialists recommendation I haven't yet. I don't know if I can cope with this blood ... I'm a nervous wreck. How do I make sure she isn't sick? Maybe I should take her to the vet just to be 100% positive ... could they tell if she's in heat right now or would it only be a guess?

| All you have to do is pick her up and look at her vulva (wee-wee). If she is in heat, she will be swollen. You can also take your fingers and separate her a little and see if there is any blood unless you can readily see it on her vulva. yorkies usually don't bleed much. one of my girls makes a mess but the other one, you can hardly tell when she is in heat. |

Ok I have another question (and this will really prove how little I know about heat cycles because ALLLL of my dogs have always been spayed/neutered -- so please don't think I'm a dummy). Where exactly does the blood come from ... her pee pee or her booty? Where should I be looking?

| the blood will come from her pee pee, right between her legs.. and if she is in heat it will be very noticably swollen. Also the other dogs even though they are girlls might be sniffing her. |

| Mimi gave no signs of going into heat. I knew she went into heat because when I bathed her I wrapped her up in a towel and had her on my lap. When I picked her up I noticed a spot of blood on the towel. It wasn't much blood and thank god it is over. She is going to get spayed soon. Since she is tiny buy baby diapers (premature size) and cut a hole in the back for her tail. |

put a diaper on her for the day and see if its really her that's in heat, this way you can either confirm or rule it out.

| Ok there was NO blood yesterday! What does that mean? How long does a normal heat cycle last?

| Jen, reading this just made me laugh. Don't worry...I would be feeling the EXACT same way you are right now. I bet she is in heat. I agree to put some fancy panties on her for the day and just see if there's blood on there later. Then you will for sure know. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ok, So do all of your dogs use the wee wee pads or just cali? If your not sure if she's in heat still, then start thinking UTI. has anyone been drinking more water and peeing more? that's a sign of a UTI in dogs. also is anyones vulva swollen/red/or itchy? Is anyone scooting? if you suspect one one is doing any of this and you can still don't think cali is in heat then i'd get urine samples from everyone to bring to the vet. i don't think you would be required to bring any of them in. just drop off the pee and they'll send it out to be tested. no worries. calm down

| Jenny, just put doggy diapers on each one of them for like 1-2 hours and find out who it is.
