| Poodle Grooming My fiance's mom has a poodle puppy and we are having a hard time grooming her. I was just wondering if anyone can give us any tips. I didn't know if the same products we use on our yorkies would be good on her too. Her hair is really different and it mats so bad we brush and brush and it is still matted. She is about 15 weeks old right now. We don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We are really hoping that it is puppy hair and we won't have this much trouble later on. Thanks

| What I do.......... Quote:
Don't comb the hair dry as it will break and damage. I usually do her teeth first and then bathe her with shampoo, rinse and wash again, rinse one more time and put on conditioner (plenty). I leave it on for atleast 5 minutes and comb her with a regular comb while the conditioner sits on her coat. Be very careful NOT to get water in the ear canal as poodles are prone and notorious to get otitis (ear infections). After the hair is matt-free, I rinse very well (make sure there is no residue left) and then towel dry. Meanwhile, I dab a little bit of cowboy magic all over her hair, clean her ears with Q-tips, and pluck the hair inside the ear (it must be done to prevent infections). I then comb her again with the cowboy magic detangler on and coat still wet while blow drying her. Lastly, I cut her nails, put 2 bows on her hair and viola! P.S. I keep her hair short with pom poms because she is black and gets hot easily during the summer and winter (I keep it nice and extra warm inside). I have had her with a long coat but she is happier with it short. Here is she is

| Aww she is really cute. I will have to tell Susan. Her poodle is a toy poodle as well she is suppose to turn silver, but we are crossing our fingers that she will stay black. I searched and searched for a black toy poodle and I couldn't find one in our area. Her roots are starting to turn silver but her ends are dark. Susan had another female poodle like that. When she was cut short she was more silver and when her hair was long it was black. We also have been brushing her while she is dry. I am not there when she gives her a bath. Maybe I get her that stuff for V-day. Thanks

| I'm not a groomer I grew up with toy poodles. My mother has one now. We've always done our own grooming. I'm sure there are some wonderful products out there that would make it a lot easier, but what we do: Brush her out good before bathing. The bath will just make the matts worse. Bath her good with a mild soap. We use baby shampoo. Then, as someone said before, a good conditioner....let it sit a few. Rinse well. We brush as we dry, a section at a time. trim the feet and base of the tail with clippers. Use longer blade on the face or just scissors (whatever is more comfortable for you) The little flea comb is good for the tears. The body, we always use scissors on as needed. Shorter in the summer, letting it grow in the winter. The biggest difference I see between my yorkie and Mom's poodle is the brush. The slicker brush works better for the poodle hair. It's curlier and thicker than my yorkie's. This is the type brush I'm talking about for the poodle. We do her nails last and then spritz her with a little doggie perfume. She loves her grooming time and will absolutely ROLL in the yard to get dirty if she hasn't had a bath and wants one. Good luck! |

| Thanks so much...I hope Sky will start to like getting groomed better. My little Summer hates it just like Sky, but she is finally started to get better. I hope Sky will eventually because the poor thing gets so matted. I think it is going to take time for us to really get the hang of it. I thought about trying to find a good groomer to help us, but I don't know of any.

| I keep my poodle shaved and keep his ears cropped. He gets groomed about every 5wks or so. He is solid white and even tho a pedigree, he has street dog tendencies, lol. I found this is the best way for me, to keep his coat and ears from getting matted.

| I have 2 toy poodles and groom them myself. If you "fluff dry" their coat after you bathe them, it will be straight as opposed to curly. It won't get matted so easily. My apricot has hair that mats very easily so I brush him at least once a day and keep him cut shorter. My black has more silkier hair and I only brush her hair about twice a week and it stays mat free. The products that I use are: Paramount Itty Bitty Puppy Kitty Shampoo, Paramount Conditioner, and Paramount Tangle & Mat Combat Conditioning Spray. You can only get them through Shure Pets (I sell them!). Also, poodle puppies coats do change from the "cotton ball" texture to more silkier as they get older. I have a great book that describes the entire grooming process and it also has step by step pictures. It has helped me a lot! It is: Poodle Clipping and Grooming: The International Reference. Hope this helps! Missy |

thanks that does help. I was hoping that her hair would change when she gets older she is only like 4 months now. I think Susan decided to keep her hair short but maybe after I tell her this she might change her mind or just keep it shorter not so long.
