would like to adopt I have a few questions for those that have a lot of different animals. We lost our cat on new years and I miss the meows that I am considering adopting. My questions is I have Peanut my yorkie(8months today) a 10 year old shepard mix (very laid back) and to birds (cockatiel and cockatoo) I was thinking of adopting a young cat or maybe two. I am afraid that bringing in a young cat my birds and Peanut may be injured or worst with the tiel. Has anyone been there? I was also thinking that two little kittens would be nice and they don't have to know that cats eat birds. There are just so many cats in the shelter that we visited, I am so confused. Any help would be great. Thanks

| I would go with a kitten. Cats learn to fear dogs from the reaction of their parents. If you get a kitten that was never taught to fear dogs then they should play with your puppy just like another cat. The bird this is a different story. Hunting birds is instinct for a cat. We had a cat that had never been around vermin, yet when I got a hamster, she spend day & night stareing at him & trying to get into his cage & finally gave him a heart attack. So I don't know about the bird/cat thing.

Hi Vicki. My concern would be for the birds you own. It's hard to tell how the cat will be with them and that's even if you have him or her as a kitten. I have a for instance for you; I have an umbrella cockatoo. My male cat never bothered him. Actually would play with her some BUT my female cat would stalk her, climb her cage etc. We had both cats as kittens. I really think that it depends soley on the personality of the cat. I do know that that the females seem to be more predatorial then the males. Both my cats are now deceased. Slinky passed at 19 yrs. and Sammy died at 10 yrs. old of a broken heart. Due to how different the both were with our parrot, we chose not to take the chance and get another Best of luck. Elaine

Thanks for everyones input. After visiting the shelter and talking to a lot of people there we are going with kittens. Some people even have birds and cat and have had no problems. We are going to wait until the end of March/begining of April when kitten season begins. I was told that I could foster the kittens to see how it works out. I was told that kittens have a real rough time in shelters and a lot don't make it. The kids and I have already started to kitten proof the laundy room, thats were they will stay when no one is home. Hopefully everything will work out and we can save a couple in mermory of our Baby cat.

id go with kittens, theyre easier to teach not to bother the birds. i have a teil, and when i first got my kitten, i was scared that shed hurt her. all you have to do is if the kitten starts showing interest in the bird, poor some water on the kitten, or make a loud noise(something to discourage her). i did this with my cat, and now, she hasnt looked at the bird since we got her two years ago

We also lost a cat just about 7 weeks ago, so sorry for your loss .. I had contacted the breeder and she did replace our "Ben", with a retired grand champion spayed female and her last kitten... They do not bother the dogs, the kitten will sit and the top of the stairs and tease them though.. I do not have any experience with birds..Cats do have that hunting instinct... I would stick with a kitten......
